I put some cheato in my tank months ago and it just took off. I would turn it daily, trim 25% every month. Well, i had a buddy tell me he never turns his cheato so i tried for a month. Sump gets jamb packed with cheato and i trim 25% off. As i normally do i flip it so whats at the bottom is now on top and i noticed something. What was at the bottom is pretty loose and at first i thought it was really long hair algae. Normally cheato is pretty stiff compared to hair algae but this was very loose and flexible. Looked at it closer and it was not solid green anymore. It had a bunch of clear spots in it.

My question is, anyone ever experience this? Is it going bad? If it is, can it release anything back into the tank that is bad? How many people turn or dont turn it?

I can try and take a pic tomorrow if that would help

The stuff on the bottom hasn't gotten enough light in 2 months. Where it's a tumble algae it appreciates the turning, so that it all has its turn in the sun.

I don't turn, but it gets light from all sides.

Having said that... I found some in a dark bucket without any flow and it was alive for 4 months and was nice and dark green.
