When adding substrate to an existing system I would add it incrementally, and used to rinse it using tank water collected during WC's,

I managed to get it to move around in one corner with when I was playing with MP40 placement, but otherwise it's never been stirred up even with the voretchs on full.

There also have a tongan (miniflakes) 2mm which is probably what blindskater is running. Maybe buy a bag of each to get some variety.
