I bought a squamosa ultra blue clam yesteday from my LFS
and when i woke up this morning it had this big gaping mouth and it seems like its mantle got kinda torn up. Also, the clam doesn’t seem to react to shadow/ movement and only moves when i actually touch it but it doesn’t actually close all the way and feels like one of the symtoms of a gaping mouth. I dont think it is normal but since I just bought it yesteday, I’m not sure how alarming it is. Would like to know u guys’ advices and what do u think of this? Is it in a rlly bad shape or is it just under going stress phase?

Here’s a pic of the squamosa clam

This would not concern me right now with it being new - this probably happened at the LFS. If it keeps up, then this is a sign that it probably wants more light if it continues to open so far that the mouth is "stretched." The ripped tissue is a bit concerning if it tore while stretching, but it will quickly heal if healthy - I saw a Squamosa one that had an acro dropped on it which poked a hole in the mantle and healed in about a week where you could not even tell.

I purchased my maxima a couple weeks ago. I let it acclimate on the sand in a shell and it didn’t look good. It took two days before it would attach thread and pull itself into the shell and upright itself. I placed it in its spot last night higher up on my rock in its “spot” to receive more PAR and it finally opened up more, but appears to be gaping. I hope the conditions in the tank are able to provide a good place to heal up and that it can and does heal. I think it didn’t fair well in shipping. Just crossing my fingers and keeping an eye on it. Is your clam still doing good? @fishkeeper8774

I wouldn't consider it gaping if anything it's retracted should be more like this. This is my blue maxima

Yeah. My Derasa looks nice and I feel like the reason it’s not opening up is because of being ill and having some tissue damage. At the base of the opening and top of the opening looks bad. There is white tissue that looks bleached or rather just damaged mid clam. I’ve been documenting with photos frequently and if the clam doesn’t pull through, I’ll likely take this information for a credit to my LFS. I figured it was just acclimating at first but now I don’t know,

Me Derasa looks great and has grown an inch in about 6 months.
