Clam mantle receeding

ug thats a bummer. Id decrease the light to if that's what happens immediately after the move up.

how did you acclimate them.

I acclimated it by floating it and adding some tank water every 10-15minutes for over an hour.

No i am not. Should I? I thought they were getting most out of the lighting and a bit from filter feeding. Could've read miss information.

Did the clam come out of the water at any time at the store when it was put in the bag ?
Or when you took it out of the bag to put it in your tank ?

its been short a period of time for it to be food I think. Light acclimation could be a prob. The original prob may be it was just getting used to the tank, Im trying to find the good acclimating a clam article.

Never been out of water. At the store the guy put the bag in the water to grab it and here when i put the clam in after acclimatization i submerged the bag to pull the clam out.

Good job, In my opinion, that's the best way to remove and put a clam in the tank.
Sometimes they can suck in air and need to be burped.

From my experience clams that are dying usually "gape"
Clams that close up their mantle are usually being agitated by something.

If you have a video camera I would set it up and record the clam when your not in the room.
I think something is nipping at it....

Did you remove the toadstools that are on the shell?

I did. The foot isn't attached to the rock and looks very fuzzy. Is this normal for a clam foot?

I think it's still a little soon for the clam to attach to the rock. It's still getting used to your lighting and flow. It will move around a bit until it finds a spot it likes.

You have to feed it phytoplankton. I'm thinking that's your problem

I'll be the first to say that the clam is going to die. Very rarely will they ever bounce back once they start gaping. Not feeding phyto for the couple days it's been in your tank (even not feeding at all) is not the worst thing in the world.

For what it's worth, that's not a Maxima, it's a Tear Drop. They used to call them Tear Drop Maximas, but they have reclassified them as a totally separate species. It really is too bad that it's not doing good because they are beautiful specimens.

I wish there was some advice to be given.

I'd agree with this. Next time to fix this issue, when you see it at first signs , take some rodi add baked baking soda to it, to buffer the water to an identical ph and dip the clam in that fresh water for 10-15 minutes. They do great in FW. Pinched mantle disease is a fast killer, you just have to be quick about it as soon as you see it progressing dip , your clam looks pretty far gone at this point.

Higher Thinking, I agree with you. Lack of feeding was not the cause of this trouble. But this clam is not gaping. It is retracting it's mantle.
By the way I can tell you know your clams. Not many know that the tear drop is not a Maxima. Back when I started everyone thought that they were the same.

Also agree with Macdaddynick1, Do you think it's to late to do a FW dip ?

And yes it is a Tridacna Noae. It shouldnr have a fuzzy foot. Should have a nice big chunk of a foot or a bunch of thread like things at its base. It looks to b rather agitated by something though. They also like high light so i cant see it being light shock. Possible bacterial infection on its foot...
