Clam on a half shell

ive always seen “remove immediately” associated when feeding this. My pistol, who apparently has tripled in size I mean seriously.. he came 10” from his cave to grab his take out.

Do I need to remove Rock and search the cave network ? Or what is the reason everyone says to remove the shell after feeding ?

I think the only issue really is if a lot of the food is uneaten it could pollute the tank a bit........or the leftover shells piling up.
