Cleaning overflow

I see a lot of waste on the bottom of my overflow. It is 29 inch down. How often and how do you clean it? Should there are a lot of copopods in there

I never clean it- once settled is part of ecosystem of tank. Once disturbed gets into water column causing haziness

Welcome to R2R! You don't need to clean the overflow, but if you want to, siphoning it out would work.

Leave it. The gunk is not a bad thing and, as you've seen, the overflow box can be home to beneficial critters :)

Welcome. I would leave it alone. Consider it a micro sump chamber.

Home depot makes a great little bucket vac and i try to get back in those corners 1-2X a year - can’t hurt

Welcome! I don't clean mine - like others have said, I consider it a little mini sump. That said, if I've had any sort of algae breakout, sometimes I'll just clean off a little bit, but I leave the bottom alone.
