Clown fish showing symptoms!

Clown fish of 2 months just started to show rapid gill movement. it’s less active, I fed the tank and it was interested but it wasn’t eating anything. just swimming around it.

It’s just sitting over this rock getting really close to it. On closer inspection there’s like these reddish flares coming out of the gills with each breath. My other clownfish doesn’t have this (shows no symptoms)



Please help!

Little guy is definitely breathing hard and is clearly sick. The fish Medics will need a bit more background on your Tank. Mainly what inverts and fish have been added recently and were they QT'd. Does he normally look that fat? I'm wondering if your fish could be constipated or maybe egg bound. Not sure if clowns have that problem though.

It's unusual to me that the fish is suddenly trying to host the Duncan. it's usual spot was right below my frag rack in the corner, but now it's showing these symptoms and shoving itself against a Duncan? Something feels odd.

Three things that come to my mind..... coral sting, which I doubt).... excess mucus- prime suspect issue or flukes which I also doubt
If mucus, you can try and give it a 5 minute freshwater bath same temperature as display tank (add air stone if you can or else fine) and return fish to display and see if breathing and flaring improves

Not seeing any mucus on the fish, Flukes does seem pretty reasonable right now. Treated my tank with rally pro which supposedly treats flukes and similar issues.

Getting some RO water to do a freshwater dip tho.

It will - just takes a couple of days to kick in and takes a little longer and would help with mucus if any

I immediately removed the rally pro. apparently it’s horrible for the tank and contains stuff that’s harmful to coral growth. It’s basically falsely advertised as reef safe

Its actually safe for coral and inverts and I use it regularly

Reviews stated otherwise, no affect on LPS coral? Really hesitant about this product now especially since there are better options.

Also having a hard time catching the fish to freshwater dip it. I’m worried if I’m running out of time..

The rapid breathing not eating and rigid swimming are general symptoms of an issue with clownfish.

Did the symptoms develop gradually or suddenly?
Is the other clownfish showing ANY similar symptoms (even if milder).

Understood. I’ll give it a go later today.

Fish seems to be fine oddly enough. There’s still this flab that hangs from the gill, but it’s relatively active and no hard breathing. Fish is up in the column swimming around with my other clown, and according to my dad it eats.

Last night I found out one of my pithos crabs had died and was in the process of rotting, basically right where the clown fish was heavily breathing. I feel confident that my system would be able to handle a single small pithos, but perhaps it was some sort of localized ammonia spike that the clown was affected by, hence why none of my other fish are affected. Either way, I did a water change.
