Hey guys

So about 3 weeks ago my bigger clownfish nipped at my smaller one which took a very small nip out of his fin(under his body)

The nipping has stopped and they swim around together all the time
Both eating and acting normal

But now hes getting like a white "fluffy" type thing in the section he got nipped, and at first it was tiny but it just seems to be getting bigger and bigger
But just want to know is this just healing process or is it something im unaware of ?
I have a spare tank ready to go if i need to treat with something

There is a rare fungal infection that I've seen a few times, and this *could* be that, but I was able to get a positive ID by clipping a bit of it and looking at it under a microscope. I've been able to treat that with 75 ppm formalin baths daily for 45 minutes, but I do understand that formalin is not easy to get in home use. Two other possibilities are bacterial and viral. I didn't jump to bacterial, but most bacterial infections are reductive, not additive. What I mean is the bacteria infected lesion seems to get eaten away and not build up in size like this. There are viral diseases that can cause a fish's skin cells to become giantized, but I didn't go with that as my first choice in that the timing seemed to quick....those cells take time to grow, although maybe?

Jay

I do have formalin 37% on hand currently

Was advised to try methylene blue everyday for 1 week first
Then formalin if the MB doesnt work

Do u suggest to just go straight to formalin ?

Methylene blue is a LOT milder, so try that first, but be ready to change to formalin if conditions worsen.

So ive just gotten home from work and had a look at the tank and it seems the bulk of the fuzzy white stuff is gone, strange
Maybe it got bitten off?

Do i proceed with treatment ?

I would still try the methylene blue. The base material is still attached to the fish and can continue to cause issues.

Could be, easy to miss that. It also could have just broken off.

Hi again jay, i got my hands on methylene blue from aquasonic
Its an australian brand, the only one we got
And i know the methylene blue you guys have is a 2.303% concentration
Ours is 1.3 %

But they dont have any dosage recommendations for a bath

It only says 5ml per 20l of tank water and redose after 3 days

But id prefer to just give the bath for 30 minutes daily or as needed
Would you know anything about this product ? Or figure out how i could use at as a bath

I even called the company and a few shops but everyone seems to say "cant help, just dose the whole tank"

A one hour bath would be more effective than 30 minutes. None of my references give doses for short term use, they all list 2 to 5 ppm as a 24 hour static bath. I found one reference for 10 ppm, but no time frame was listed, but I think that would be fine for an hour. Calculating ppm (or mg/l) from a liquid formulation is not my forte though - I'm just not up to the math this early in the morning (grin). For most medications, a dose of 3x the 24 hour bath is acceptable for 1 to 3 hour baths - so 15ml per 20l of dip water.
