Hi I'm curious and have a new bio cube so I am wondering if cotton balls can also work as biological filtration.

Don't use cotton balls, they are not the same as poly-fil/filter floss and I believe they they will just break down or become clogged.

As others have mentioned, you don't *need* extra bio media necessarily, you want the rock and sand to be the main biofilter in your tank.

But, if you're looking for an inexpensive and safe bio media, look no further than the plastic kitchen pot scrubbies that can be found at your local dollar store. Here's an example, but find them locally even cheaper:

There was an oil filter for cars that used a toilet paper roll that you replaced every so often. I wouldn't use cotton balls or toilet paper for a reef tank, but they could both work for a little while.
