I have had a small 10 gal nano reef for about a year. Yesterday my water got a touch cloudy for no apparent reason, levels are:

Temp: 76°F
Salinity: 1.025
Ammonia: 0
pH: 7.8
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 0ppm

This morning I see the sexy shrimp is dead, along with 4 of my hermits. I am certain these aren’t molts and are dead crabs.

Nothing seems out of range so I am perplexed as to what could have caused the crash here.

Snails all seem to be going strong, as is one surviving scarlet hermit crab.

Any advice?

Any algae in the tank?

Is your temp normally that low?

Are you sure it was cloudy then deaths, not vice versa?

Yes, that’s always where the temp has been. There’s macroalgae plenty to keep everyone fed. Positive the cloudiness started first, which made me assume bacterial bloom, but not sure what would have triggered that as there is no excess food. The CUC eat anything put in the tank

Have you used any chemicals or medications?

Inverts can be sensitive to some chemicals.

HOW MUCH DOES A FISH’S FEEDING REQUIREMENTS AFFECT YOUR STOCKING DECISIONS?

  • I usually learn about the demanding feeding schedule after buying the fish!
