I have wondered the same thing also....never made any sense to me. Do they think we are going to turn them in for unpaid parking tickets??

FWIW in some states you can get a person's address from their plates I believe. In the car mod scene people literally have a price breakdown of their build costing tens of thousands of dollars. Also common to the same scene are people posting stolen car threads about getting their expensive build stolen. I think this is where it originated from. If I can see your plate on a VW forum, I can steal your VW and put your cool stuff in my car.
How that applies to a basic car sale? No idea. My guess is people do it because they think they should.

Someone might think you're very pretty and want to shoot outside your window at night and stare at you (lol). With the larger internet audience with more creepy people, I think people feel it's maybe not a bad idea.

Yup. With a bit of shadowy google-fu, it's not that hard to turn a plate into an address... If you're a thief, knowing exactly where to go look for an expensive toy is a good thing.
Gun forums are the same way... people list and photo their entire collections, and list their addresses on social media. You're handing a thief a shopping list.

Wait, you don't think people steal cars and guns?
I would agree, maybe with a stock Dodge Minivan blurring plates might be extreme. But on someone's modified Honda, it's an easy steal and even easier to part out.
All I can say is I've spent many years playing with cars. A stolen car can maybe can be tracked. His $15,000 built motor is much more difficult to find. 100%, people use the internet to steal these things if someone is careless enough to put it all out there. And people love putting expensive things out there for internet points.

I will admit I've never tried but as Jalopnik pointed out its a simple as filling out a form in the DMV. Or at least it was in years past. Maybe they've improved it. To me, that's not a farfetched idea though. But I might be an idiot. Lol.

no you can’t just go to the dmv. i was a detective for a sheriffs dept for years. there are ways to get certain information but you’d need to break the law and lie on some documents. fact remains - our license plates are going to be visable while i’m the road, so why blur them out in photos? makes zero scientific sense.
people are paranoid. ;)
