Usually after copper 2 doses of prazipro are done 8 days between them. Then some like to watch the fish for any symptoms for 2 weeks - since some fish need 3 doses of prazipro.

Is 30 days in copper enough if they stay in the same system and the copper is reduced or do they need to be transferred to a sterile system?

Can’t some ich and velvet encyst and then hatch after the 30 days and infect a fish since then copper is sub therapeutic?

In theory, some ich tomont stages may survive 30 days of copper (velvet won't) but in practice, this doesn't seem to be an issue. What some people do is lower the copper level, dose 2x with prazi, 8 days apart, then bring the copper back up to full dose for 48 hours and then move the fish to a sterile tank.

What ppm is the copper lowered at? And is it copper power that is being discussed? Or any form of copper. Thanks

Almost everyone now uses copper power or coppersafe. They are essentially identical. Some people still use Cupramine and a few use other ionic copper products. Really though, 30 days is the same across all types of copper. I normally tell people to lower the copper to 50% of a full dose or less.

I deeply believe in Biosecurity and agree fully with the current protocol. I am always looking for ways to be efficient. One tried and true technique to increase efficiency is parallelism. I understand using multiple medications at once increase stress on the fish but is it safe enough to dose both cooper and prazi at the same time so long as there is aeration and close monitoring for signs of distress?

As long as you are using amine chelated copper (copper power or coppersafe) it works fairly well. Prazipro seems a bit less well tolerated, so coppersafe plus pure prazi powder would be my primary choice for mixing.

I'm about to start my first test of doing CopperSafe and Prazi at the same time. I normally use API General Cure as my source of Praziquantel, but given that General Cure also has Metronidazole, I wonder if I should get pure Praziquantel powder? I have a Regal Angel, Juvenile Emperor Angel, Hippo Tang, and Powder Blue Tang in this batch of QT?

I have about 33 gallons of system volume in my quarantine setup. I just added 3 tsp of CopperSafe as my day one, then I will add 3 more tsp tomorrow, then I will test my copper levels and add the final amount of CopperSafe needed to get about 2.25 ppm.

I found this Prazi powder I can get here tomorrow:

It funny because I just read your post on dosing PZQ then I saw this. I’ll use a fine mesh.

Seems like the dose rate depends on the brand? I got what was stated as pure prazi, and the label stated 1 gr per 100 gallons. So I have .01 per gallon.

Maybe my math is not mathing haha.

I dissolve it in everclear alcohol. No issues with algae at all. I mean 3 days later you can do a WC to keep water clean.

The 1 gram per 100 gallon dose is done for simplicity’s sake. I use the standard 2.2 mg/l dose. They use a higher dose, sort of rounding up in order to get easy to measure numbers. Their dose works out to be around 2.6 mg/l.

I prefer starting with the 2.2 dose. Although I don’t see it myself, I keep hearing people complain that prazi caused their fish to go off feed. Then, with the prazi eating bacteria growing, starting with a lower dose slows that, plus gives more space to raise the dose later if need be.

I prefer pressing the prazi through a net over dissolving in alcohol. The alcohol won’t fuel algae growth (it is actually like carbon dosing). However, it can kill off the tank of fish if you aren’t careful; if you use more than the absolute smallest amount of alcohol and/or if the tank doesn’t have strong aeration, the alcohol fuels bacteria growth which can strip oxygen from the water.

Prazipro also uses a glycol solvent which has the same drawbacks. I always advise people to use strong aeration and dose at 85% when using that product.

I’m at 1ml of ever clear per .15 gr of prazi for 15 gallons of tank water. As for aeration I start it 24 hours prior to the dose. I do have prazi pro, but after finding the pure stuff, rather run it vs the pro.

As for running the prazipro at 85% you see any issues with it not working as it should?
