Cyano or Dino

How do I tell the difference between the two? I'm afraid I have a Dino outbreak!

Thank you.. So I know it's not cyano so what's the difference between diatoms and Dino? I'm a bit of a newbie, I think I might be heading to my lfs today.. My ph is 7.8-8 everything else is basically undetectable.

Diatoms will appears as a brown/gold dusting on your rocks and sand. How old is your tank? They are normal in new systems and will normally go away after a few weeks if you keep up with you water parameters.

Dinos are much more problematic. They have a longer stringy appearance and normally have a bubble at the end. You can blow them off with a baster or they will disappear overnight only to return during the day when you're lights are on.

If your arent sure what you have, try posting a picture of your tank.

Here are some pics.. My set up is about two months old.. I transferred 75% of water from the guy a naught from which was 4 years old.

I would say dinos

Im still thinkin Dinos. But if they are black pearl in appearance, they might be Bubble Algae, mixed in with Hair Algae.

They have a thicker base than go to a clear air bubble looking..
