I have a small 1 gallon tank that I'm trying to cycle, I'm using Fritz Fishless Ammonia and Fritz Turbo Start Live Nitrifying Bacteria

I have a dry rockscape and no plants

My initial Ammonia reading was 2.0 ppm

After 1 week Ammonia was 1.5 ppm

After 2 weeks Ammonia was 0.25 ppm and Nitrite was 0.0 ppm

After 3 weeks Ammonia as 0.0 ppm Nitrite 0.0 ppm and Nitrate 0.0 ppm

My question is did my cycle fail? Should I add more Ammonia and start a new cycle?

Thank you for reading my post. I'm new to the hobby and appreciate any help/advice I can get

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

I'm sorry you're having some trouble here. What are you using for test kits? You can't have ammonia go from 2.0 ppm to zero and not have anything for nitrite or nitrates, so I'm wondering if this is a testing issue.

Thank you Fish Fan for reading my post. I'm using API Marine saltwater test kit

I am really thinking that this is test kit error. The API kits don't get a lot of love here on R2R, but honestly they are fine 🙂

That said, you cannot have ammonia go from 2.0 ppm to zero and not register anything for either nitrite or nitrate. Could you bring a sample of water to your Local Fish Store (LFS) and ask them to test the water?

API is not the best for the levels we are testing at, if Hannah testers for no3 po4 and alk are out of reach I personally recommend salifert kits, if ammonia is dropping the cycle is doing its thing!🙂
And remember take it slow and it will get there

To have 0 ppm nitrate in your new system is strange because nitrate removal needs organic carbon for bacteria consumption of nitrate or algae consumption. If your system has neither then the next thing to note is the no nitite at two weeks. Typically, but not always nitrite disappears excruciatingly slowly. As for the ammonia concentration, it looks slow but not terribly unusual. Before buying more test kits, add more ammonium chloride (Fishless ammonia) to about 1 ppm. If the system is robustly cycled, the ammonia will drop to zero in a day or two.

0 nitrate is definitely strange.

At the other hand 2ppm ammonia is converted to around ~8ppm nitrate if I am not mistaken and that is a low value on the API nitrate test kit, might be actually quite hard to tell. I would maybe add another 2.5 ppm ammonia - that should be processed much faster now, maybe a couple of days, and then the resulting total ~18 nitrates should be clearly visible on the API kit.

It would also help if you could post a picture of the API measurement vials against the chart with a bright light (phone torch?) from the front. API test kits are not that bad as they say, the only issue is that ammonia is very sensitive and even a tiny amount of ammonia will mostly show up as 0.25, so as soon as you have fish etc it the tank it mostly never gonna read 0 for a good while. And that low range nitrates can be sometimes hard to read.

UPDATE:
I added more Ammonia on 10/12/2025 level was 3.0 ppm
I added more Fritz-Zyme TurboStart 900 bacteria on 10/13/2025

Tested Ammonia on 10/21/2005 ( eight days later ) level was 1.0 ppm
Tested Nitrite on 10/21/2025 level was 0.2 ppm

I added some more Fritz-Zyme TurboStart 900 bacteria on 10/21/2025

Thank you for taking the time to read my post update and thanks for you help.

UPDATE 10/28/2025

OK i tested today:
Ammonia 0.0ppm
Nitrite 0.0 ppm
Nitrate 5.0 ppm

My question is should I run the lights now?
At what level Nitrate should I add some crabs, clean up crew? My dry rock is still white without any algae. Also I see no diatoms on the sand bed.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post update and thanks for your help.

UPDATE 12/02/2025

After adding 2 drops of silicate supplement over 8 days I finally can see the emergence a diatoms on the dry rock and sand.... Houston we have lift off!!!! I'm on my way. 🪸🐟🐠 😍

Thanks to everyone on this post who offered their suggestions. 🙏

UPDATE 2002-12-29
After one of my Cerith snails died and all my biofilm disappeared on 2025-12-18

I decided to try to boost the biofilm by adding two drops of TurboStart 900. That seems to have worked, my remaining Cerith snail came out of borrowing in the sand after three days and resumed regular grazing. My rock scape now is starting to look ugly. 👏👏👏

I think I'm going to let the tank keep running for another two weeks as is before I add my first mushroom coral. Its been a long ride ( 4 months 😲 ) since I purchased the tank on 2025-09-06. I wonder how many first time reefers like me at the convention expo were successful in setting up their nano tanks.

Doing an extended, dark cycle is indeed a thing, and may well have some benefits (I've done it myself), but there's no reason to prolong your first tank out for 4 months before adding your first mushroom. You could have added a mushroom on day one if you wanted to 😄

Are you hoping to avoid the "ugly stage" of a new tank by waiting so long?

I'd light this tank up, add some livestock, and enjoy your first tank even if it brings some uglies and challenges. Save the extended dark cycle for your second or third tank 🙂

I certainly wish you luck with your tank either way! Keep us posted on its progress!

Thank you Fish Fan. This is an exercise in patience. A lot of people told me it is impossible to do a 1 gallon saltwater tank BUT I love a challenge. Thanks to you an an everyone on the Forum that kept me encouraged with the good advice. 🙇‍♂️

There is zero reason why you can't do a 1 gallon tank, some people run quart sized jars 🤪

Really small pico tanks do have their challenges, but no reason you can't successfully keep one - go for it, keep us posted how it's going!
