Damaged Frogspawn

Looking for some guidance on this frogspawn I got last week. Arrived in a pretty rough condition a week ago with some tissue damage (seller has already corrected the issue). It opened up and has polyp extension on the edges, but the center looks rotten. Sadly I don’t think it will survive but looking for confirmation, and if keeping it in my tank with the hopes it survives puts the rest of my tank in jeopardy.

“Toadstool” leather not a frogspawn. They’re pretty hardy, they do tend gum up the tank when they’re particularly peeved. Nothing carbon shouldn’t be able to handle. You could let it recover or try to slice the good parts off/or rather the bad parts. I could easily see it recovering.

Thanks! I got a frogspawn in the same shipment and have been calling them the wrong name since lol. I’m sure I’ll get it straight soon. Thanks for the info!

Most soft corals tend to be listed on the "easy" side and are usually more forgiving than some SPS and LPS.

I would leave it alone and not move it for at least a month.
Leathers, toadstools in particular, do not handle shipping well and can be stressed for several weeks.

Yup! I kept it in there hoping it wouldn’t foul my tank, and during a water change a huge chunk of the decaying tissue came off almost as if it had melted. It was pretty gross and fascinating at the same time. I removed the tissue that detached. The remaining portion looks to be healthy and about 60% of the remaining polyps are extending (more than they were to date. Sadly it appears my tuxedo urchin is showing interest and likely going to nibble at it while it’s still around. #nat#nature

It didn’t make it. My urchin found interest in it, completely detached it from the plug, wore it as a hat for a bit, tried carrying it around the tank before dropping it off a ledge. I netted it up, and placed in a cup in the freezer. RIP

Why would you put it in the freezer? Leather corals will attach to rock rubble. Even a tiny piece of live tissue will attach and grow into into a new toadstool.

Just my guess here: freezer=humane euthanasia in a lot of people's minds?

The thing was beat up on arrival, the seller refunded me the cost, it was an uphill battle since day one, and there's nowhere in my tank that the urchin couldn't hunt it down again. Not sure why it decided to feed on it, but it did. That's why i made the choice I made.
