Ok, I figure its time to get something out there for my 178G tank experience.

Earlier this year, my marine tank yearning was reawaken and I I ordered a Cadlights 178G artisan II . I really liked the dimensions of this tank, and felt the risk of shaky reviews for the company’s support was at a manageable level.

I want this tank as a FOWLR setup, but maybe grow it into more if I want in the future once I get more experience under my belt.

The tank arrived last week! the first challenge was to assemble to stand. With Artisan II aquariums, Cadlight’s offers a solid maple wood cabinet with two choices of finish: glossy white, and glossy black. When ordering I inquired about other options since we really wanted one with a wood grain finish, but nope. Ok, no biggie. We chose the black. Although it is very contemporary looking, It looks really nice. we can work with that.

Assembling the cabinet is a challenge, gotta say. I guess we were hoping to receive an assembled cabinet, but it came unassembled. Our Ikea-foo is not to a level that makes assembly very fun, and the instructions are horrible. It looks like its a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy and no detail. Also, in one case the predrilled holes were in the wrong place. We have been doing a little every day and are almost done. Still have door assessories to put on, but that’s about it. It does look nice as it’s coming together.

They did ship the wrong cabinet though. I received one that was meant for a custom 180 gallon aquarium and not the standard 178G dimensions. We noticed this, because it was not predrilled for plumbing at the top. The stand will be a few cm longer than usual as well.

We contacted the company and they gave us the option of receiving a replacement, or using this one and drilling our own plumbing hole. They sweetened the deal by offering a media reactor on the house if we did that. So we ended up taking them up on the offer. Haven’t received the reactor yet, but it was nice that they gave me options to addressing their shipping mistake.

So far Cadlights has been pretty reasonable. Most email issues have been responded to within a day. When making the sale, they threw in some extra items. I won’t list them here because I don’t know how often that’s done but it was nice. I’ve exchanged questions with Eric and Scott and both are friendly and seem to want to help.

A few negatives:

- Was told that the DC pump would have a particular GPH rating. The one shipped does not meet that rating. I asked about it in an email and it went unanswered. I interpret this as meaning that what I received wasn't a mistake and they're not going to do anything about it. I’m annoyed by that, and will probably replace the return pump in the future.

- There is only 1 email address for support, but different people you interact with. You never know who you’re going to get. I made one voice phone call so far to the support line, and it went right to voicemail.

- They were rather vague on the skimmer that is part of the bundle. Was finally told it will be a certain model and I know that it is very under rated for that size aquarium. I asked about that and was told that the rating of the skimmer was based on the combined skimmer and sump combination from the skimmer company, but the rating of the skimmer alone is much higher. ok. I googled away, and even went to the skimmer company’s website and saw nothing to back that up. I sure hope I am not just being told some BS. I’ll upgrade the skimmer if I need to, but don’t make up some BS. (no evidence they did, but also no evidence to support their statement). Oh, and was told the skimmer would ship separately and be a few days lag. No matter to me. Im not even close to a point of requiring it. It’s been a week lag so far, and haven’t received my skimmer or a peep from the company on the matter (ie: no tracking number, etc). Just reached out to them for info, and am awaiting a response. I shouldn’t have to do that though.

One thing we didn’t get our heads wrapped around is how big and heavy a 178G is! Wow. The shipping company unloaded the box into our pickup, since going down our rural driveway wasn’t gonna happen. To get the thing out of our truck and into the lower level of our house, we needed a tractor! Our hopes of lifting it ourselves was clearly not an option.

We got it in the house though! Continuing the install might now be halted until next weekend when we can get some friends over to help lift it up onto the stand. After that I’ll get the plumbing put in. and scape it!

stay tuned for updates

Gee wiz! We have the same tractor. I would worry that it couldn’t hold the weight. Were you concerned it would topple over?

nah, didn't really worry about that except it was a little dicey with the angle coming into the truck since its a steepish decline.
The tractor is a 4044M, which they say has over a ton lift capacity. Not sure if that includes the weight of the bucket, but even so I think we had some wait to spare. It worked out ok, thank goodness.

Received the skimmer. Although they told initially I'd be receiving a skimmer that is rated from other sources lower than my aquarium size, they actually sent me a nice AquaMaxx FC-180. No complaints with that one.
I got the PVC put in last night. Kinda of afraid to put water in it, since this is my first time doing PVC. I guess the next step is aquascaping though.

some updates:

We just filled the tank last night and are tuning the herbie drain. Cadlights guys came through with the complementary bio reactor. I don't have it in the sump right now. Will probably introduce it at a later time.
We have bio-spira in the water now, as well as that clarifier pack that comes with the substrate. Skimmer is in place, but turned off.
We hard plumbed the return line, so that we could have a manifold, and also hard plumbed the 'emergency' drain. I'm putting 'emergency' in quotes because I always though the emergency drain is supposed to be larger than the main drain, but in this case its not. (3/4 inch emergency, 1.5 inch main).
Im using their PVC for the main drain, since I saw no point in replacing it. They ship flex tubing for the emergency and return drains. I'm so glad I chose ahead of time to hard plumb those because the tubing they send is too short.
You can see in the picture the uPVC to PVC coupler adapters they offer. I'm really happy with those. I was prepared to buy adapter unions, but these couplers are working just fine.
I wish they would have put a gate valve on the main drain, rather than the ball valve. I'm finding it is very difficult to tune that ball valve. its very tight, and moving it with precision is not easy. Still, not a big deal. just would have been nice to have a nice gate valve there.

The instructions they sent for assembling was a really bad photocopy and looks generic for several of their models. The position of the holes drilled in the aquarium doesn't match the pictures in the instructions. you see the main drain is all the way to the right on our aquarium, but the instructions actually have it placed in the middle.
I had no idea how to properly fill and start up everything in order. After emailing cadlights, I received a really good explanation of what to do. I'll add it to this thread later. I just want to run it by them 1st.

Regarding our lights, we discovered is that the Current USA lights we have are a little too long for the tank. You can't tell from the picture, but the little feet that the lights are supposed to sit on extend too far to actually lift the lights. so the lights are sitting on the tank rim. I kinda like this look, but its not as the light manufacturer intended.

Here's the initial startup steps that the Cadlights guys gave me:

1) make sure all the pipes are glued and fittings are tightened with gaskets all in place.
2) fill water ONLY from the display area as the water will fill up the tank, overflow box and then over fill into the sump. some people say to fill the display tank first and then the sump separately and this way is NOT accurate.
3) once the water is filled up to the point where the sump is 75%-85% high. shut off water and make sure the water (while pump is off) in the sump does not overfill. this is to prevent if in case the pump shuts off unexpectedly, the sump can hold all of the excess water coming down.
4) leaving the drain valve wide open, plug in the pump. leaving the valves wide open ensures that the drain is at full speed. if you have a valve on the pump, make the valve 85% open
5) when water is pumping into the tank the drain will start sucking water down into the sump. you can then now open the pump valve gradually to the highest speed you like while siphon sounds can increase. if you are using the pump that came with the tank you can dial it up to full speed
6) it may take your tank overnight or 12 hours up to a day for the downward siphon and pump return to reach equilibrium and in the meantime, you may hear louder siphon sounds.
7) at this time you can now use the Herbie drain valve to gradually dial it down so that the water slowly increases in the overflow for the true silent effect of the Herbie. each increment of 1/8" turn, give the system about 15min to adjust and equalize again. do so until the desired water level is reached in the overflow box. make sure to keep it below the emergency drain and if you hear the emergency is draining water, then the Herbie valve is too slow and needs to open up a bit. DONT leave the water valves unattended while water siphon is equalizing or you can have a flood if the Herbie valve is too slow.

worked great.

The tank is now cycling,. I'm using powdered ammonia. I inoculated /w biospira.

Got my first batch of fish out of QA and swimming happily.

Current occupants:
1 Royal gamma Basslet
1 Fox Face Lo
1 Yellow watchman goby
1 sailfin Blenny
2 Ocellaris clownfish
3 Kaudern's Cardinalfish (had 4. one didn't make it out of QT).

I am ready to get my first Tangs into QT now, but am not sure of
1) which are appropriate for a 180G.
2) what order they should be introduced in.

I could wing it. but if anyone has suggestions feel free to let me know.

@HotRocks @4FordFamily DanlnMichigan is looking for advise on tanks to populate his 187 gallon tank. I thought you could provide some great insight for him on selection.

Is it? The water level is below the baffle tops, If I go much lower, the drain tube will be out of the water and make a splashing sound.
I think to lower the sump water level would require me put an extension on the drain.

Shut down your tank & see where the water level sits. In case of a power failure, or shut-down during a water change, you don't want a flood.

Here's my sump

if I turn off the sump, the water level raises to about 75-80% of the sump capacity.
It looks like you might have modded your sump to keep the water high in the overflow portion yet lower in the other compartments?
