I was given a few sps colonies today of some really nice acro's. The colonies are pretty big. The only problem is some of them have dead bases and some of the underneth branches that are close to the base are also dead. Will the acro's put down a new base and get new growth on the dead parts of the branches? I'd hate to have to make frags out of these guys.

I have had acros die around the base and then grow back over it but it seem to take longer.

I personally would frag as much of the dead stuff off as you can without making the colony jacked up looking. It will promote more growth, allow more flow through the coral, and give it some new life hopefully.
I wouldn't leave it for sure. It sounds like it NEEDS to be trimmed up a little.

Pics are always good on these types of things.

+1 I've seen this happen to colonies that get a lack of flow and also the base might not be getting any light

This has been my experience as well. Personally i thought it was a light issue but after diving in the ocean, there sure is alot of flow out there.
