I've had "Frank" for several weeks now, he was pretty outgoing and would come to the glass if I put my finger up to it, he recognized the spot feeder I used and would mosey on over to check things out.
I purchased him for aiptasia control but can't say I actually ever seen him eat any, although they did seem to reduce in number.
Well, ol' Frank was the only inhabitant of my 50 gallon frag tank which is ties into a 120 display with about six other fish in it. Short of a single episode where he got himself caught in a rock - and needed the jaws of life to get him out - he seemed to be fine and recovered with no apparent issues.
About a week ago ol' Frank quit being so active, didn't come to the spot feeder anymore and three days ago I found him laying flat on a mound of green hair algae - he seemed to be caught in it but not really that much. It appeared he was very weak, the flow of a Tunze had him spinning around and doing flip flops that would make a crazy clownfish proud.
Well, Frank held on for awhile but passed last night. There was nothing obvious, no bulging eyes, no ich, no heavy respiration, no rubbing against rocks, I mean it was like he was an old fart who had spent his last days in the aqua world.
I have weirdly enough, lost three zoanthid colonies in the last two weeks (melted).....I've been dosing Ca, Alk, and mag at half the recommended 1ml per gallon rate, but I just hooked up a GFO and Carbon reactor to the system in the hopes of dealing with a growing algae issue and any warfare amongst the corals.
Could the addition of GFO/Carbon be an issue with the death of Frank ??
Could Frank of poisoned himself eating zoanthids ? I never seen him eat them, I just assumed something about the GFO maybe causing problems. I haven't seen any fluctuations in the Alk, although the tempature is getting up to 82 from 78 with a little warm spell we've had.
With a 4' by 2' tank and the 120 with a 30 gallon sump, lots of evaporation, I can't hardly think lack of oxygen was a problem - the other fish in the system seem fine. I haven't found an electrical leak but I did add two corals, one a 3" encrusting montipora and a 4" tall Digitata - both of which have bleached out within a day of being in the tank. (although they were stressed from shipping to begin with)
Water parameters are unchanged from the norm, nothing is jumping out at me. Any ideas - I have lost two emerald crabs within days of being put into the tank which I also thought was weird. That was a couple of months ago.
