Well I think I may be developing a seam failure. I moved a couple of months ago and noticed this a week ago. It's located on the bottom right front pane. Not sure if the move may have caused this. Thinking about just tearing down the tank. It's a planet aquariums custom 270g 72x36x24 SPS tank. Id hate to have a failure on my new construction home that I've only been in for two months. Unfortunately this looks quite sketchy to me... I just replaced my whole tank due to a similar looking issue. It sucks, but it's better than salt water damage and losing all livestock.

Yeah, not sure I'm gonna stay in the hobby. Might have hit that fork in the road. Frustrating. I've enjoyed the hobby for 17 years but lately I've felt like I'm too busy and need more time with the family. This might have pushed me over the edge.
Yeah, I don't like it either. Is your aquarium still under warranty?
I doubt it. It's 6 years old.

Busy dad here.

Go FOWLR and a few simple soft corals. My daily maintenance is feeding, glass twice a week, water changes every 2 weeks. It doesn’t have to be a ton of work.

On that seam, 100% failing. Sorry to see, looks like you have armour seams though which might be helping.

I do the exact same, I kept softies as they don’t mind getting a little dirty if I can’t get a wc that weekend.

I'm currently looking for a new tank. Reached out to planet aquariums as this tank is only 6 years old. Told my wife about it a few minutes ago and she told me to order what I want. I'll have to look for someone to help with holding coral and fish until I get a new tank if I decide to stay in hobby..... Or sell everything real quick which would be hard to do. We'll see what today brings in my tank search.

Honestly I don't do water changes any longer. I run moonshiners methods and have great mechanical filtration. I typically just feed, clean glass every couple of days, send water samples out every couple of months and change filter socks once or twice a week. I think I'm just a little tired mentally from the stress of the move two months ago and now this.

Oh we are in a similar boat my friend, we just moved houses in Feb, then my mom passed in March, and I feel every bit of this. Finally got over the small algae issue after moving and the tank is back on auto pilot. I also scrape twice a week and change rollermat about once every two months. I keep it simple because of dad life and the tank looks great. If I really have to get into it, I’ll save it for after kids go to bed and I’ll stay up late getting things done.

So sorry to hear about your mother. Planet Aquariums said they only have a 3 year warranty and i'm at 6 years currently. Now i'm looking to see what i can get quick before it gets worse and i spring a leak. hopefully i can find something nice real quick. we'll see.

just move all the livestock into one of those cheap black costco totes. you can use your water too. they work great for a holding place until you can find a replacement. you can also use brute cans to

I may set this 300 gallon brute container up again. IMG_5054.jpeg
If you’re feeling ambitious, this 300g Rubbermaid can be elevated on cinder blocks/etc, and plumbed to your existing sump!

This should yield you a holding system which will last indefinitely while you take your time making plans!

That is one of the reasons I got out of it when I did (2013). Family time. My 90g had crashed hard so I took the opportunity to hang it up for awhile. Now, 13 years later I'm looking to get back in. And it'll be another 2&½ years due to cost and flooring concerns.

So don't feel regretful if that is the route you take. It's a noble one!!!!

The more I think about it I'm leaning towards calling it quits for a bit. Sell all coral and livestock. Maybe hold on to 1/2 lights and pumps for a year to see if I change my mind. If I decide to get back in if have most of expensive equipment

Sorry to hear. It blows my mind that tanks back in the day lasted a long time but somehow the $3-10k ones a lot of us are running can’t have a warranty longer than a reef tank settling into its stride or apparently even lasting a half decade.

The LFS that got me into this back in 2006 had a reef display that was 9 or 10 years old. My family’s All Glass freshwater tank was running for 20 years.

Its is not just one company its a lot of the high end and the internet is bringing it to light.

Yeah, its crazy. i discussed with the wife what my options are and she said she is good with me ordering a new tank the same size or downsize or just get out if thats what i want... she is being very supportive and said she knows i have a passion for it so she is good with what ever i decide. my tank is 72x36x24 so its a custom size and i would have to wait a couple of months to get it made and delivered. And i'm not going to wait that long before i tear this tank down. the way it's looking is i'm going to tear this tank down and take a break for a bit. Sell all coral and put my fisn in my friends 400g tank while i decide if i want to start up again in a year or so. I messaged Planet Aquariums and they only have a 3 year warranty which is probably comparable to everyone else. LIke you said, it sucks that a tank wont last longer then a few years. if i do decide to stay in the hobby, i'm going to have my aquarium built like a tank with the extra protective inside seams. we'll see.
