I’m using live in my tank, but Reef Nutrition had this recent extensive discussion which got me considering their dead, which is somewhat cheaper, but I opted for the live phytofeast for this month:

Yes, copepods will eat dead phytoplankton, among other things like organic waste and dry foods. There is a perception that live phytoplankton is best, but it's not true for the copepods that we put in our tanks. These are opportunistic animals just like corals and fish. We sell a Phyto-Feast Live with live algae if you are interested.

I personally culture my own phyto and will dose my tank to keep levels in line and then give away or trade what I don't use or need. I harvest about 5 gallons every two weeks.
