I notice I get quite a bit of detritus in my sump (and one particular corner of my tank where there are tons of Yumas to trap it). I do a water change weekly and siphon it out. It is interesting to me that my Nitrates and Phosphates seem to fluctuate week to week despite my feeding and general maintenance being very consistent.

In my black and white way of thinking, I imagine not having the detritus build up at all (roller mat) and then dosing nutrients consistently would yield more predictable and more stable parameters. How do you manage it and what thoughts do you have to share?

I clean my sump every year or so. Not much build up in the display though. Most of that detritus is pod habitat, even seen some baby snails munching around.

I blast my rocks every night, its free coral food. I blast the rocks before a water change too to suck it up.

I stirred up my sandbed and it was pretty dirty. Tank has been up 9/10 months.

Filter socks will catch a bunch of it.

For those of you using socks, how often do you change them?
After they've been overflowing for several hours or longer. On my acro tank I shut the roller down a few nights a week. Corals seem to enjoy the extra food. I never clean my sumps. I'll vacuum detritus out of the DT when doing WCs but I don't move anything around, I just get what I can reach.
PS: I'm bare bottom.

Once or twice a week, although sometimes I pull them entirely

When they fill up, every 3 or 4 days.
