Hello all,

Let me preface by saying that I have never made a tank before so this is going to be new to me.

My buddy just informed be that he can get me glass cut to any specification I would like for dirt cheep or even free! I have always loved peninsula and drop off tanks so I figured, what the h***! I have watched videos on people making different size tanks and the process looks fairly simple (though it could be deceiving). I would love some input, or if your opinions on whether this would work or not.

The plan is to drill it and sump it (which is not included in the sketch because I have no idea how to get that fancy in this software). I have a local guy who told me he could make me any stand, so the plan would be to have the doors, on both sides, without handle and flush, as is in the photo. I also like a little edge on the stand (3") for setting things down and a little extra width for overall stability. Water volume in the display comes to ~43 gallons. I told my glass guy that I would need 3/8" glass. The back wall of the "drop off" part will also be raised an inch to allow for sand/rocks to not just slide of the ledge.

Like I said, thoughts on any of this would be much appreciated! Recommended silicon, tape, techniques, plumbing, stand thoughts, etc. Thanks in advance!

That looks like an awesome build. I've always liked drop off tanks, i'm definitely following this.

Can you elaborate on this part? Will there be like a curb or something?
Seems like a really good idea, and I don't think i've seen it before.

Yea! I just found a picture online for example, not actually mine.

Oops! Just realized I had my dimensions on the sketching software a little wrong - 18" wide, not 24". Updated plan -

What do you guys think would be an appropriate glass thickness for this tank? My buddy can get me 1/4” for free but has to order 3/8”. Would 1/4” be fine if I braced it, or is that risky?

Hi! Did you start your build? I'd do 3/8" even if it isn't free. It's going to be fabulous; good luck!

Hello! Unfortunately I had to put this build on hold - probably going to wait until school is over. Didn't realize that my clinical rotations aren't even in my current state and I don't feel like moving anything bigger than my current 22g AIO!

As soon as I have some fancy title in front of my name I will definitely be reviving this thread and going all out!

Seriously though, did you ever get back on this build?
I just successfully built my own frag tank and I'm looking for a more challenging project to take on.

I think all drop offs have a lip on the step to allow sand to reside and not be blown off.

Unfortunately I did not. Life and school got in the way a bit but hopefully I get the opportunity in the next few years when things slow down!
