So I grabbed a screen window kit today at home depot I wanted to cutout the areas where my RMS mounts and auto feeder sit on the rim since it goes long ways across the tank but that now seems like quite a project especially if it doesn't turn out. If I just shave about 1.5 inchs on each end I should be able to keep the top in a solid rectangle but across 46 inchs will I need to use a piece of this framing down the center though for support?

No support needed if I’m understanding you correctly.

take a look at a window screen Or sliding door screen. As long as the material is tight you shouldn’t need a support.

a picture would help to better know

This is the kit window screen kit
I just wasn't sure if I should run a bar straight down the middle since I'll have two scrap pieces left. I'll be putting it together in the morning

I don’t think you would need it but once you pull it together you can tell if it will sag or not.. take a look at a sliding glass door with a big screen.. or a large window.. no center bar

I've made several diy window screen tops with the aluminum frame and I have found adding a center stiffener helps. It's not going to hurt.

Also if you’ve never don’t this before or messed with screens I suggest a YouTube video or two. Mostly because you can make it too tight and bend in the sides or pull out other sides as you roll in the rubber line. (I’ve done this a few times and still hate DIY screens) lol
