Here is a container I got from walmart same with the lid, then I used gutter guard from the dollar store or you can go to home depot or a hardware store to get.

Only thing I would change is to put a few holes in the bottom above the crushed coral line to make it easier to drain any detritus that built up, or to just add a little more flow to the container:

Cool! Is that guard made from plastic?

yes the gutter guard is black plastic from the dollarrama here in canada. If you can't find it there then homedepot or a building supply store.

The lid was from walmart in the same section as the container's. All I did was dremmeled the lid which is sold separately, then glued the gutter guard inside of the lid.

I was also thinking of using wide pvc pipe with end caps on each end then gluing the bottom end cap, then doing the same thing with the gutter guard. This way I could put the holes near the gravel easier. just not sure on how easy it would be to take off the lid.

Very nice I've been using odds and ends around the house for this same purpose but this looks nicer and I wouldn't have to deal with plastic floating parts. If I get really determined I might use a glass drill to solve that drainage issue. I like that I can take it out and it holds water though!

That's a good point that it hold water. I may leave it as is for now because of that point. All I did once a week was lift the container and give it a few swirls under the water, which is too much of a hassle. it's not meant to set it and forget it or the detritus will build up and smother the cuttings.

I just put it in front of a power head at an angle that gets the detritus but doesn't move the shroom. I wonder if we could make something that suspends some rubble and settles out the detritus into a bottom area to be washed away.... Sounds like today's project lol

yeah, crushed coral suspended on a mesh and eggcrate, large enough to let the detritus settle through.

finished, almost no flow so no need for a top. The detritus settles right out but I had to change to smaller rubble. Not pretty but effective:) I'll make some of the jar version too!

Okay. Sorry. I am new to fragging. I have a rock with mushrooms that are just growing over each other.
So all I need to do is cut a piece off the shroom, put in the container, and they will eventually attach to the substrate?

Depending on the shroom yes. For the cheap ones like red blue and some spotted discomas you could put them in a blender and the pieces would all grow new shrooms. With rhodactis just cut a piece with a razor blade and make sure it has a piece of the foot. I've had rhodactis melt and each piece makes a new baby like this)

There are lots of styles (and probably lots of price points), but try looking around for seed sprouting lids. They fit standard mason jars:

There is also 316 Stainless Steel mesh in all sizes to use with an ordinary plastic lid you mod:

As well as plastic "needlepoint canvas" like this:
needlepoint_box18_xl.jpg

Quoting from the page where that image came from:
Plastic canvas comes in several grades: 7 count, 10 count, and 14 count. The count refers to the number of squares in an inch.

Didn't know that! :)

The needlepoint canvas is probably even easier to find than gutter guard because every crafty store there is carries it - including Walmart. http://www.walmart.com/search/?query=needlepoint canvas

Here is an image of my Florida Recordia:

As you can see they do not require a mouth, when cut, and you can cut them up into 6 to 8 pieces. I usually cut them into 4, then wait a week or two. Then cut the 4 into 8.
