Do I need to add phytoplankton for the copepods to reproduce and thrive, or will they be able to find their own food source without having to add anything?

I use chaeto in my fuge but with live rock and sand you should be able to get a population going

They do not eat chaeto. They eat stuff like algae, leftover foods, and plankton.

I used to feed my tank phytoplankton and watched my copepod population explode. (Small tank, no fish)
