Do I need to add phytoplankton for the copepods to reproduce and thrive, or will they be able to find their own food source without having to add anything?

They do not eat chaeto. They eat stuff like algae, leftover foods, and plankton.

I used to feed my tank phytoplankton and watched my copepod population explode. (Small tank, no fish)
