I believe the "main purpose" of R2R is very subjective. While one may use it as you suggest, another may use it as a social platform and another may use it for looking at pictures and another may use it for DIY ideas and so on. In the case of the OP, he was looking to use it to find a mentor and not looking to have many mentors.
