I’m getting a new 75 gallon with a 20 sump soon. What would you recommend? The drilled overflow or the external?

Drilled is always better in my opinion. Just double and triple check that the tank isnt tempered glass

Hob overflows ime require a closer eye of the tank.

Pump starts slowing because of maintenance needed, very likely siphon can fail. Dont skimp on a return pump, if reading reviews and you are finding even 10% of reviews say they failed or has no reviews, dont do that pump :)

Drill drill drill if you can. I wasn't 100% sure of the glass on my tank so I had to go with a HOB overflow. If you go the HOB route make sure the equipment is rated for the volume of water you'll be using in your set up and a controllable DC pump makes adjustments much easier. I personally like the U-tube style overflows as opposed to the ones that require a pump for the siphon. My tank is close to 4 years old and never had bubbles accumulate in the U-tube over time, never lost a siphon and starts right back up again if the power goes out.

This might help. Most fish stores, if you ask, will let you check the tank for tempered glass before buying, all you need is a laptop and some polarized sunglasses :) I did this with my new 75 before bringing home the second one :)
