Drywall edges

Hi everyone,
Thanks for everyone's tips on finishing the inside wall. I have another question on drywall. On the finished side of the aquarium opening you screw the drywall to your studs, cut out the opening of your aquarium but how do you clean up the edges of the drywall around the aquarium opening? My aquarium will be flush with the wall studs but not with the drywall.

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. If you want it finished with no trim work, then install drywall corner bead and cover with compound.

If you want trim work....that could be any number of finishing choices.

The opening will be boxed with a picture frame appearance. I was just wondering if any one had any other ways to dress up the 1/2 " thickness of the drywall with out using compound and corner bead.

A 90 degree wood corner can finish off the edges.

If the tank is flush to the drywall, simply make your picture frame smaller than the opening....covering exposed drywall and the gap between the corners and the tank.

If the tank sits back from the surface of the wall, first make an "inner frame" the thickness of the space from the wall surface to the tank. The dimensions of this frame will be what you want to see in your tank....that is, smaller than the actual width and height of the tank....you don't want to see any framing pieces of the tank. To this inner frame, you build the face frame that will cover the gap between the wall and tank...and then some. Here's a hand drawing of what I'm talking about.

You then shim this into the opening and afix with nails or screws. No corner drywall will be visible. Hope this helps.

I used J molding . It comes in 1/2'' and 5/8'' I slides over the cut drywall edge. You can find it in the drywall section of the big box stores. It is plastic. Makes most uneven cuts look straight and clean. Also nice for the magnet to ride against when cleaning the glass
