I have wanted a seahorse tank for years, even before i had my first saltwater aquarium. So after many freshwater tanks and a few saltwater ones I'm finally going to attempt this endeavor, starting off with a 3 gallon aio i had (previously a neocardina shrimp tank) and proceeded to cycle, which is almost at the month mark. It still has some lingering cyano but is going away as i am writing this, seriously the last couple days it's gone from almost the whole sandbed to just about none left, and yes i know the new sandbed and live rock from an existing tank is possibly not the best in terms of dwarf seahorse safe, however i have a very clean tank that the rock came out of and I'm willing to risk it for the benifits outway the bad to me. It will be awhile before any seahorse will be added so if something comes up it will be taken care of or I'll start over, we'll see haha.
For lighting it has a cheap $30 light on top, don't really remember the brand but it grows macros very well, some of the macros went from half an inch to about 3 inches already, and the dragons breath is starting to show orange on the tips.
I have 2 gorgonians, one photosynthetic and one not, the non photosynthetic one will have its polyps out every now and then when feeding.
A few zoas just because i like them and they pose no threat to dwarfs. 2 small blue leg hermits, 2 nassirus snails, 1 astrea snail and a micro brittle star was in here but it was small and is now hiding and i haven't seen it since.
It has 2 internal pumps, one for the overflow which has filter floss and the other is pushing water from the top for a very gentle flow, both are rated at 50gph.
I have a sponge behind the intake slots to prevent anything going into them as a precaution.
Theres quite a few different copepods on the glass and sandbed so I'm pretty happy with that so far, i add some phyto every other day to keep them happy and reproducing, I'm hoping the sand, rock and macros help keep them going.
Temps at 74-76 degrees.
I top it off a few times daily as i only work weekends so that frees up the week nicely for my hobbies.
I'm new to hatching baby brine shrimp but i have a batch started now so we'll see how it turns out (again i have 3 other tanks that will eat them so nothing going to waste), i have spirulina and hufa powder to enrichment for them for now, i might try my own blend eventually but for now it's a learning thing.
I also started a opae ula shrimp tank at the same time and they all seem to be happy, maybe eventually I'll add some to the dwarf tank, maybe not as i haven't decided yet.
This will be a long journey unless it falls apart before i get the dwarfs as i know how difficult this will be, ive read enough threads and seen how few actually made it to the year mark without lots of losses.
If that happens i have a cool macro invert tank 😎

I would highly recommend joining the facebook group specifically for dwarf seahorse called Dwarf Seahorses- Help & Advice. There is a lot to learn and some very experienced keepers on there.

Ah I see. Well in that case, this book contains the most up-to-date info on dwarf seahorses: “Dwarf Seahorses for Beginners” by Mike French. I’d definitely recommend having some fenbendazole on hand for when hydroids pop up. It’s almost a guaranteed with a non-sterile startup. I think your tank looks great. Many keepers who start out with a sand-bed eventually end up taking out the sand due to cleaning difficulties/high nitrates, but I do think the tanks look better with sand. Dwarf seahorses are so fun! Good luck with yours!
