We're heading down this weekend for the week... curious if anyone has any suggestions on places to go, see, etc. I've been to the outer banks before (kittyhawk), but never Emerald Isle. I really want to go on an airboat in the marsh, but I'm not sure if they even offer anything like that down there. The only thing I know 100% for sure that we're doing is chartering a boat to go offshore fishing... and forgettin about work for a week. Any suggestions on places to go, things to do, places to eat, places to photograph, etc?

Man I don't know. But the marsh boat sounds fun. Can you do any collecting.

It's just a relaxing place most of the time. I did break my neck there about 15 years ago! (don't go body surfing after a storm)

My family vacationed there during the summers for about 12 years and it's a great place. The thing I like about it is that there is NOT much to do. It is forced family time. No high rise hotels, no street full of bars, etc. Just a quiet and beautiful beach community. I do not recall seeing any marsh boats at all as that entire area is protected so you are likely out of luck there. There are only a few restaurants on the island itself. Here are a few things to do (not sure if they would interest you but here they are):

-Atlantic Beach (which is north of Emerald Isle) has a shopping mall and a few restaurants. May be fun to head up there if you have a rainy day.
-Head into Swansboro (go over the main bridge and take a left). There are some quaint shops and a few cafe's there. There is also a VERY good place to buy seafood (some of the best shrimp in the world) which is called Clyde's Seafood. It will be on your left in Swansboro. The shrimp boats dock there and you buy whatever they caught that trip. If you have kids, you can also ask some of the fishermen to give you a tour of the docks and boat. Kids love it. It is not a restaurant, but a place to buy seafood and cook it at home.
-If you're a golfer at all, there are a few nice courses close by (Star Hill comes to mind).
-Walk down to the Point which is at the southside of the island. The houses that they have built in that area are amazing and there is always good shell hunting down there. A lot of boats enter the Sound there and can be fun to watch as well.
-The beach itself is amazing. Rivals any beach in the US in my opinion.

Hope that helps a bit. While there is not a lot to do there, it sounds like you'll be on vacation. So you will be able to relax there without a problem. Have fun.

Beaufort is also nice, lots of little shops. You can also go on paid ferry to Shackleford Banks or to Cape Lookout, where the lighthouse is. There is Fort Macon at Atlantic Beach. Morehead has really grown up in the past few years, there is lots of restaurants and stores there now. Don't forget about the NC public aquarium in Salter Path, between EI and Atlantic Beach, it was redone a few years again and it's super nice. If you need any help shoot me a PM, I pretty much have my phone with me all the time even when I am on the water.

love obx, I am heading down in two weeks. Are there any pet stores that have saltwater fish in the area? I may have to check out the aquarium.

Have a great time!!

I fully plan on it... thanks!

You know, I wouldn't be interested in collecting, I just want to see the marsh. I am fascinated by the swamplands and marshes, and all the wildlife in them. I'm not giving up on looking for them, but I'm not going to be terribly disappointed if they don't offer anything like that

No worries there, I refuse to get in the water after an incident involving a very large stingray down at North Myrtle Beach a few years ago. But... good info regardless!

This sounds like a place for me! I don't do the typical 'vacation' stuff... don't drink or party and I absolutely hate being busy all the time. I'm looking forward to spending some good quality family time and seeing my 2 year old son experience the beach and ocean for the first time. Thanks for the suggestions on places to go! I honestly don't plan on staying busy much... just a few evenings for sunset photos, fishing, and just generally relaxing.
That souds like fun. Have a great time!:fish2:

Thanks, I'm going to try my best!

Saw the aquarium on the web... definitely on our agenda. Know anything about a place called 'Shell Island'? One of my parents friends told them there was an island you could go to down there that was packed full of huge shells and they called it Shell Island, but I can't seem to find much about it other than showin it on google maps

As far as I can remember there is not an official shell island, but I will check with a couple of men when I get work that grew up in that area.

Looks like they were probably referring to Hammocks Beach State Park, which requires a toll ferry to get too. You more than likely would pick up the ferry in Swansboro. They are privately owned and operated under a state contract. All the shells would be on the ocean side if the island.

Cool, thanks. We may try and inlude that in our agenda while we're there. We're leaving out tomorrow morning and going to stop in Raleigh for the night, then head on over Sunday morning.

If anyone has any other suggestions on places to go, things to see, etc... feel free to toss them out :) And, thanks to all of you who have already suggested things!

I also think the unspoiled and undeveloped nature of the area is its strong point. We like Ocracoke Island.

Well... the trip has started off pretty good. Yesterday afternoon we stopped just outside Winston-Salem, NC to get gas... while we were there, a white van pulled up with Antique Archeology on the side. We actually got to meet Mike, and he was a super nice guy. Unfortunately, Frank wasn't there, but still.. it was really cool.

The OBX is great! I am in Kitty Hawk right now. We have two houses, one in Kitty Hawk and one in Waves. I like Waves more because it has a calmer atmosphere. I am not sure on things to do at Emerald Isle as I have never been there. I have been going to the OBX for years!
