That’s a good point. My girlfriend specifically has trouble sayings animals. It always comes out as “aminals” despite her knowing how it should sound and how to spell it.

Being in the chemistry field it bugs me to no end to see people say PH instead of pH. PH to me is powerhead. Also the whole clown hosting anemone thing bugs me too.

My husband is a chemist too. He gets irritated when people type “PH” instead of “pH.” I have to say, that one bothers me too.

I used to be bothered by this stuff. But the point is to communicate and the brain seems to have amazing abilities to ignore the rules and let that happen.

Some days my English skills are poorer than people on here from around the world where it is a second, third or forth language. I envy them and hold them in awe.

I’m not bothered by it. I laugh at some. It tells me something about the author at times. I edit scientific papers daily and have edited all 6 of my children’s college papers for years as well red penned many of my own students papers. I notice them but I don’t sweat it on forums and text. Now, if you are professional sending a document or resume I am all about circular filing ones with all the mistakes mentioned above!

Ok, so I consider myself a grammar/English/usage policeman. I correct my kids all the time. . . .

Based on your comment, you may be interested in the book. “Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation” (Truss, 2008). Enjoy!

I hear these things from teachers, college students, and professionals. It’s incredible. When I went back to college, I found out that grammar had changed too. Writing papers took on a new dimension of frustrating. Nowadays, commas and quotations are used differently than when I went to school the first time. So confusing.
