Erythromycin in display tank???

Just wanted to know if it’s okk to put erythro in my display tank. I just don’t want to kill the biofilter. I’ve used it in a quarantine tank and it didn’t seem to do so. My powder blue looks like it has a swollen stomach with slight discolored patches in its body, a condition I’ve previously treated with erythro. I just figured to treat the display is easier than catching the fish.

The active ingredient in Chemiclean is Erythromycin (even if they deny it), so it is reef safe "with caution" (Edit: It's Tylosin).

Chemiclean is an antibiotic, erythromycin, despite misleading claims otherwise.

We always suspected it was erythromycin because of the very strange wording that it was not "erythromycin succinate:". Sort of like saying you don't have a red car when asked if you have a car.

But apparently a government office in Germany tested it and found it was erythromycin:

Chemiclean is the antibiotic tylosin, according to an expert analytical chemist friend of mine who tested it himself.

It will remain active for some time, and may still be active in my tank. It (or the changed microbiome) may also have been a contributor to the final demise of my magnifica that was having issues. But it did a great job on cyano in my tank, albeit slower than expected taking multiple days. Still no cyano well after treatment.

It may be skimmed out, and it will bind to particles such as organics and mineral surfaces. That may be the primary way it is removed from the bulk water.

It also chemically degrades in water through a variety of different natural processes.

I think the #fishmedic team will know if Erythromycin is reef-safe at therapeutic levels.

Edit: Forget what I said, I fixed it after Fish Fan was so nice to point out my mistake. You can still rely on the feedback of the fishmedics though!

OP never spoke about ChemiClean, I just referenced it because I relied on an old post of Randy which got corrected. So I think OP actually means Erythromycin.

I prefer not to treat display tanks with erythromycin - there is a risk of damaging the biofilter.

I have treated DT at 12,5 mg/l to control Cyanobacteria and did not see biofilter inhibition. However, this is well below the dose to treat fish diseases.

As Jay stated, the biofilter can be changed with antibiotics.

For any meds I tell people QT system. Here is my reason behind it. The need to get meds to a fish in need of antibiotics is super hard. Too much that can feed on it, or an exact amount of water might not be known. All of which can be of no issue to for a QT system with minimal bio filter, and a known amount of water.

Targeting the issues is much easier.

I have yet to have to use these But got for this specific scenario. Maybe not 100% as strong but spares your biological somewhat and helps if it's an internal issue I would highly recommend you check out fishotel.com they have a lot of great products and the Owner is super helpful he was more than accommodating to answer my questions!. I keep this, nitrofuricin green powder for baths,nitrifuricin green feed flakes and formalin on hand for just in case scenarios
