Good morning All,

I recently purchased three euphilya frags.

Two hammers and an octospawn.

Last night after a water change I noticed that the octospawn is receding slightly, and its tentacles look skinner than they did the day before.

I wanted to know if these corals normally close up at night or show changes like this. I purchased the frags at RAP NY on Sunday, and I'm really hoping to get ahead of any issues. I'm running chemi pure blue and floss in the HOB.

Parameters:

Nitrates: 7.9
Phosphates: .19
Alkalinity: 8.7-8.9
Calcium: 460
Salinity: 1.026

All three of them are in a medium light area under moderate flow. Pictures from this morning before the lights come on below. I lost a cristal torch a while ago but the recession was 10 times worse. Hoping someone can give me an idea of what to do.

Corals normally close up at night
They are brand new to your tank and then you did a water change. Give them some time to adjust
So I'm just being paranoid? I plan on leaving them alone and letting them settle in. I know that euphilya in general can decline rapidly/suddenly.

Do you guys think they're getting a healthy amount of flow?

The octo spawn closed up for an hour or so last night, but then opened right back up. This morning it seems to be doing better.

Did you dip prior to putting in tank? Lately I have been seeing a lot of people having issues with bad and random stn mostly bjd. I will not add another coral without dipping anymore because of the issues. As I had lost a few euphyllia one after another after bjd got into tank.

mine all close up at night - hammers, torches, frogspawn.... and slowly open back up in the AM. Should be fine. Sometimes one or two heads also close up - could be a fish nipping, flow etc.... give them some time and note how they are during the daytime/nightime cycles

I did give them a brief dip.

Based on the short video would you say my flow is too high?

Gorgeous tank. Out of curiosity, what do you feed your hammers and how often?

Thanks! Fish poop and mysis shrimp that the fish don't get. I used to feed them Reef Roids (and other corals) but found a) that this caused big spikes in Phos and b) poop and mysis were more than enough. Key thing is getting the flow and lighting right.

I'm beginning to lean this way. The acans and scoly will be fed once a week but nothing else.

The effect feeding has on my phosphates is insane (small tank I know). I'm beginning to lean away from flakes, powders, and pellets and return to mysis and brine.

I use pellets and mysis. Pellets are pretty clean as long as they all get eaten and turned into poop. I have a diamond goby who vacuums the sand bed really well so he get's whatever isn't eaten by the fish (along with the COC). IMHO feeding most corals is a scam. Feed your fish well and they feed your corals. I know some corals might need this option but 95% don't and it just pollutes your tank.

Going to consider this “resolved” for the time being, unless anyone has notes on flow, or general advice.

I’ll update if anything goes wrong.
