Experience with flowerpots?

I would really like to get a goniopora (flowerpot coral) for my reef at some point. I'm aware they're difficult, so what experiences have you guys had with them? Any care tips?

I have an Aussie Flowerpot. I keep toward the top of the tank with medium to high flow. I feed it everyday with oyster feast or cyclopeez plus I give it a squirt of whatever I'm feeding the fish. It is growing very well. It really seems to like more flow than I thought it would.

Never mind...I've got a clown and am planning to get another. I'm reading the clownfish are likely to kill the goniopora.

EDIT: Yeah, I was just reading that they do well with very small foods like cyclop-eeze and phytoplankton.

Ive had 1 for 2 years now.MY clown swims all in it a been hosting for the past year. doesnt really bother it, I've heard the same thing but guess im lucky..

I bought a red flowerpot that is captive breed. Heard that they are pretty hardy. They say the green ones are hard to keep.

I have a big green flowerpot for my clown, but he won't host it. N my dad has a smaller green flowerpot and his clown does host his. He's had his maybe 6 months now, n I've had mine for like 2. Neither of us feed ours, I didn't know we had to until I checked this thread. The only things I've had go wrong with it is it stays closed up for a few days, then next thing u know its back out. No prob. And it only closes up if the parameters r off.

Get an alveopora. They look pretty much the same and they're alot easier to keep. I love mine

If you get a gonipora or alevapora, make sure to get an Aussie one as they are much hardier.

The big difference between alevapora and gonippra is the polyp count on the stalks. The Goni will have 24 while the alevapora will have 12

Lately you are seeing aquacultured goniapora....I picked up a couple ORA goniaporas I have tried wild ones with no success. The ORA ones are easier in my opinions they seem to thrive in my tank

Actually its the incrusting ones and most of the reds are easier to keep, goniopora stokesi is still impossible to keep.. .. Ora sells a red one that is easier to keep. No goniopora is a beginners coral...Success in goniopora is measured in years not a year. Most will die at about the 1.5 year too two year mark. The key is the right food for the right goniopora and a good amount of feedings . I also believe they do feed on bacteria. The thing about goniopra is they require a lot of time and feedings Allot of tanks cant handle the added load some of them will put on a tank due to the feeding. I think a well lit nps tank would be awsum for goniopra. The ORA red seems to be the one that is different, it is easier to keep and does good with minimal feedings. Feeding golden pearls, cyclopeese, reef frenzy and the best is oyster eggs. Also Justin Credabel released a goniopora food through Two Little Fishies.

As far as clowns go most will die with clowns if they host them, it really depends on how ruff they are. My clarkiis would tear a goniopora apart in a day. It also depends on what else the clowns may host or rub up against in that particular reef.

I agree alevapora would be much easier.

Ignore the algae mess... I'm working on that. Not the best picture of it it wast "awake" yet. This was a morning pic. By mid day the tentacles extend much further. Have had this guy for a month and so far so good. Decent size got it for $20

also- i would like to note that i dont feed any of my corals. i have a chili, as well as a stereonephthya and a scleronepthya all doing fine with my water as is. probably has something to do with the bioload... which also probably has something to do with my algae problem lol. either way- my corals all look fantastic... unfortunately so does the algae haha

Wow...I thought I read somewhere that goniopora was Latin for dead coral....gods speed. Maybe lots of funk and algea is the trick....hmm....

I googled alveopora and really don't like it as much. I'm gonna try the goni. Tiny foods and possibly a supplement like vita chem...
