I have been looking for this for awhile now as a nostalgic piece.
Somehow I found one new in box.
I ran one of these many years ago.
Not sure what I will do with it but its a cool piece of reefing history.

6g WC yesterday. Removed the sand from the bottom. There was around 1 cup full.
Moved the rocks to new postion.
Corals doing well.
Also picked up 10 Giesemann 12.5K bulbs. I now have a total of 50 bulbs. Going to try one to see what it looks like eventually.
I also want to try the Ushio 20K. They are supposed to be more actinic like so we will see. Also need to try the Chinese 14K's.
The Hamilton 20K with the edge bars at 75% give a very crsip looking system.

I changed the Hamilton 20K to the Giesemann 12.5K. I could not find and Kelvin rating on the bulb or the original 12 lot case they came in. Sold as 12.5K. They also made a 10K but no way to verify the K rating of this bulb.
I will get some pics and par readings later today.
The Hamilton 20K was giving 350 par at the rack and 500 with the 2 14K edge bars @ 75%.
Still running the Lumatek ballast.

That Giesemann bulb is labeled Marine. The MegaChrome Marine is sold as a 12,500K. It should be the same as a BLV 10,000K / Ushio 10,000K (none CWA model).
Thanks. I started with the Ushio 10K so it will be interesting to see what it looks like.

The Giesemann 12.5 has more yellow than the Ushio 10K. It may burn in whiter but? I may run 1 in the garage and see if it changes.
The Ushio 20K is in now. Not as bright as the Hamilton and less par.
H-500
U-350 I will run this for a couple months. I will try the hqi setting later.

The European daylight (10,000K - 14,000K) bulbs need a break in period but can be very sensitive to the wattage they are driven at. The BLV/Ushio (none CWA models) can look greenish/yellow if they are under driven.

Which model Ushio 10K are you comparing? The CWA models were designed to North American specs and designed to operate at a lower current than the European models.

This one. I have the correct magnetic ballasts but get higher par with a digital.
Did not see much difference in color between the 2.
Running the 20K BLV on digital to start. It has a nice color to start.

Any chance you've ran these ballasts on a watt meter?

I orederd a kill a watt meter off ebay. I will test all my ballasts when it gets here and report the findings.
This way I will have a reference for all of them. Digitals, M59, M135.
Thanks!

The 20K Ushio has the best overall color of all the bulbs so far.
Par is 350 vs 500 for the Hamilton 20K. The Hamiltons color is whiter.
The Ushio 20K has an actinic look like many of the old posts I have read on it have said but its still a crisp clear look.
The color is richer with the Ushio.
Going to run the Ushio but will fire up the Radium to compare color and par in a few weeks.
The 2 side by side.
Which one would you use?
