Favorite childhood book.

As adults we can look back at our early childhood. Each generation are represented here on R2R. What book do you have the fondest memory of? Mine is Where The Red Fern Grows. Went to school in the early 70's

Late 70's/early 80's here, and I was never the biggest reader. Of all the books I was "forced" to read in school I liked my Bio text book first :) But seriously, after that I liked To Kill A Mocking Bird.

Going back a little before that, I liked a book who's name I hope doesn't offend any of our Native American friends, but does anyone remember The Indian In the Cupboard? I don't know why, but this book was on my mind lately. I think my second grade teacher read it aloud to us, and then in like the fourth grade I read it myself for a book report or whatever..... I'm fuzzy on the details all these years later.... But I swear I was thinking of this book very, very recently. Brought me back to being a kid, right or wrong :)

Wait! I was just going to post this when I seriously remembered one of the most important books I had ever read going back to my early teen years, and I kid you all not - Herbert Axelrod's Encyclopedia Of Tropical Fish!

I read/skimmed a copy of this when I was very little at a cousin's house, and some years later my older sister bought me a copy for my birthday. I think back then this was like a $50 book.

To Kill A Mockingbird is a classic American novel that should make all of us think. The Indian In a Cupboard is sort of like this overgrown kid's amazing fantasy, not that we should be keeping tiny people in small cabinets anymore. That sort of thing was fine in the early 80's, but we frown on that stuff now :)

I loved the ‘Hank the cowdog” books if anyone else has ever read those? I largely hated to read when I was in school. Once I was out that all changed and I decided Dickens was actually a pretty good writer!. Now I love reading!

Paulus and the acorn men 1965. It was the first book I ever read that I checked out on my first ever visit to a library. I read it cover to cover without a break. I still remember going to the library with my mom, sister, and my mom's friend who took us. Learning to read opened up a whole new world. I was never able to find a copy to share with my grandchildren :crying-face:

The Giving Tree

Don't you know that I see that this book is banned is certain areas for reasons I can't explain, and I don't mean to turn this very nice thread into something political/flaming.

But it's literally about a tree who gives and gives until it can't give anymore.....

I admit I haven't read it for at least 40 years, so maybe I'm missing some subtleties now.

But where's the Lorax? Where's @ISpeakForTheSeas < I'd be interested to know what books from your past got you interested in marine biology.
