Okay, I have what may be a ridiculously stupid question to most of you, but I simply know nothing about this subject. I hear a lot about filter socks. Can/should I use one in a canister filter? Canister filters, a protein skimmer, and an HOB bio wheel filter are all I have, so I was thinking canister filter. Or maybe not at all. This is just a curiosity question.

Doesn’t the canister filter come with a mechanical filter?

They usually have a sponge of some type where water is first sucked in. Just remeber to clean it regularly
