Filtering make up water with sediment filter?

Hey guys, first post! Seen in the past the BRS had been filtering their make-up water with a sediment filter and actually removing quite a bit of "gunk". Wondering if anyone else has tried this, if so, what's your setup look like and have you seen any benefits from it other than the make-up water being more clear?

Welcome to R2R! Sediment filters on their own will do basically nothing to improve your make up water quality, they are typically used in conjunction with carbon blocks to filter water before it reaches the RO membrane in reverse osmosis filtration systems.

If BRS was getting "quite a bit of "gunk" from fresh RODI top off water or even from new saltwater, I'd be really concerned about how they were getting it! I make up 45g of RODI water at a time and use it over 3 or 4 weeks. As top off water it's alway zero tds even after a month in storage. And I make up 25g of saltwater at a time on a Brute trash can, but I'd never consider filtering it as I can't imagine enough 'stuff' getting in the water to make a difference.

Are you using RODI water that you make? Or are you buying RODI water or distilled water from a store?

So I run a small whisper on the side of my brute can with just the filter media. Nothing chemical. If I had a mixing tank (station) I would build in a canister filter. No doubt.

I relate to this, the cat hair always manages to make its way into the tank some how :eek:

Seriously, I understand cat hair (I have a cat and she loves the tank) and dust or whatever. I guess I just see that floating stuff going through my wier and and getting caught in my filter sock.

I don't think I was clear enough. I meant saltwater before putting it in the tank.

So no one has filtered their saltwater with a sediment filter prior to a WC? @randyBRS can you refer the video that this was mentioned in? I don't remember, possibly one of the talks about pharma-grade materials.

I honestly never thought about filtering the water before the water change. Fresh 0-TDS RODI, salt mixed and water used in about an hour. Filtering that seems to be a wasted step or time. I'll have to check out the video.

Yep, I filter my saltwater when adding it to my tank during water changes, but I just use a 53 micron sieve I have for rotifers and copepods. I catch some brownish residue when I do it. Not a ton, but enough to make me keep doing it.
