Hi all,

Recently I got back into aquarium setup and got a 80g tank.

Filtration system is a overflow with backup going to a sump. (Similar to image attached)

The overflow pipe has a ball valve and I am trying to control the flow and quiet it down.

I can either achieve one of the following:
- noisy, max flow, sump return pump won’t go dry. Happy day but noisy tank
- quiet, controlled flow by ball valve, sump return pump will eventually dry up and overflow box will fill up slowly

I have done some research but ran out of idea unfortunately.

What have I done so far:
- fine tune ball valve but overflow box level will always increase ever so slightly and return sump dry up (tried many days)
- built a durso and installed over the overflow pipe unfortunately it was as noisy
- stick a small pipe into the middle of overflow pipe, this actually quiet it down due to reduce in air
- reduce rate of return pump but no luck

What I believe is:
- noise is coming from the air (gap) of the overflow pipe, I can Cleary see air bubble at the sump

Also included video of the current overflow and sump below:

Sorry for the long post but I ran out of idea :(

Thank you
Jono

Correction sorry!

It's a gate valve.

And most of the noise comes from the sump side where the bubble hits the gate valve and into the sump.

Maybe full siphon is not possible with the height of my pipe ?

Doing a bit of self diagnostic

Going quiet mode full siphon which water level will raise

But I am hoping the water pressure will increase as the height grows and keep it stable

Let me monitor for few days at this valve settings

Imo as long as it doesn’t go to backup overflow I am happy

No luck. Had the water level running above from 6am to about 3pm... then it started raising and hitting the backup pipe...

I am out of idea :(
