its biting at rocks but its not eating the food i offer. though it is a very new fish

Some species of filefish bite at rocks to hold onto them (weird, I know!). Or, your fish may be biting at rocks to see if there is anything edible. Still, it should be eating food that you offer it if it is otherwise healthy.

I can see the fin damage, but it doesn't look infected to me. Getting the fish feeding is important though....

What foods have you tried so far?

im keeping him in a 23 gallon right now, he picks at macroalgae and rocks. should i rehome him? hes interested in the pellets and liquid food, just doesnt bite it

its an Acreichthys tomentosus i think. sadly it died a couple of days ago. body went pink i think it had an infection or something

Sorry to hear. Yes, turning red or pink can be a sign of a bacterial infection. Luckily, those bacteria are not likely to cause disease in other healthy fish.
