Greetings All,
We have tried a few times now to get groups of fire fish. Yet, invariably, they attack each other until there is only one left. But we’ve been told they are schooling fish? What are we doing wrong? We have one that is doing well. That’s always the case. We have one left.
We have a long cycled 125 gallon softie tank. Nitrates are negligible, tested by our fish guy who comes about every 3 weeks to do the water changes.
Other tank mates:
Yellow tang
Bristletooth tang
Two Midas blennies
Fairy wrasse
Six line wrasse
Two coral beauties
Two Bengai cardinals
Three pajama cardinals
Yellow watchman goby and pistol shrimp
Two clownfish
One fire fish
All of these fish are well established.
We are considering getting a lawnmower blenny instead. Any thoughts or advice welcome. Thank you.

You were told wrong, they're not schooling fish and they will no get along in an aquarium.

Lawnmower blennies generally need a lot of algae and detritus to thirive, so if you keep your tank pretty algae free then it's not a good choice.

I have 3 red firefish and 1 purple. The purple guy does his own thing. But the 3 reds hang out all together and even sleep all stacked together at night. My lfs guy said they do school and thats been my experience so far. He said it has to be an odd number and it's better to add them at the same time.
