I don't work for an LFS, but I'd be early, be polite, wear some decent clothes, and be yourself. They will probably just ask about your background and why you'd want to work for them.

Good luck at your interview!

Bring your own pen in case you are asked to fill out an application. Anyone who asked my manager if he had a pen to fill out an application got kicked to the curb. He would tell them if they aren't prepared to apply for a job then they weren't prepared to work. It was quite comical to watch especially when the guys came in with their shorts hanging low with theirs butts sticking out. If they had their own pen they could fill out and application but didn't stand an chance of getting hired. Sorry if any of you like to wear your pants with your boxers hanging out 😉

I'm probably too late, but I've had a few of these jobs. KNOW THE NITROGEN CYCLE. That is a very typical question. I've had that one for fish store jobs, aquarium maintenance, aquaculture jobs, and even at a corporate equipment supplier. The equipment supplier had HR ask me about the nitrogen cycle during the weed-out interview. They also asked what the "most-important water parameter is in aquaculture" (dissolved oxygen is what they want to hear).

Generally they want to hear you have some retail experience, or are good with people. And they want to know how well you know the things they sell. Also that you can guide a customer to success when their water chemistry is bad.

Does anyone work at a LFS and have advice for the interview I have one in a few hours
I owned an LFS/full line pet store and was receptive to applicants who had Pet experience and knowledge of fish for sure but also reptiles, and handling as well as knowledge of products used in the industry.
Best of luck to you

At your interview, tell them these two things, and MEAN IT:

Mr./Ms. Employer...

(1) "I will never lie to you. But I will never lie for you."

(2) "I will never steal from you. But I will never steal for you."

If they can't accept your two conditions, you don't want to work there. Period. (It's call integrity, and self-respect.)

How did it go? I worked at an LFS for many years through high school and college. Loved it.

It went okay, most of the interview I feel like I let him talk, he definitley stressed the importance of customer service skills, and I told him abit about my background and he told me about his and I asked customer service related questions and then yeah. He has a couple other candidates but hopefully I get the role

Semi-relevant:

When interviewing for my job as a technical assistant at a local Mercedes/Volvo service center back in high school, I opened by starting to tell the business owner about an air cooled VW engine I had just rebuilt…

The owner stopped me mid-sentence and said “I don’t care about any of that… what I want to know is: do you own tools?”

Me: “wha? Of course!!”

Owner: “great, you’re hired!”

— It was far from what I’d describe as a conventional hiring process, but that one question told him a LOT about me as a person!
