Coworker said earlier that his wife told him bottled water was sold out in Charleston, SC. I work in a power plant up here, and I have to work if the earth opens up and Hades himself throws lava all over the place.

Pulled out the gen and ran it all day yesterday. Filled up on fuel. Usually when I do that it goes somewhere else. Gotta pull the shutter hardware. Ugh.

I'm also the guy working on backfeeds when one station is back up and another, nearby, is out.

We call you system dispatch, or a dispatcher, and we talk to "you" on the phone when "you" want more or less power. Or to tell you we screwed up and you won't have any power for however long it takes to fix our screw up...

I'm in operations, Assistant Plant Operator is my official title. Control Room Operator in training. I turn black rocks into electricity. lol... I'd rather make the smelly gas into electricity, but it's a good job, and there's no NG plant near me. Closest one I'd go to is Jasper Station and it's a good 2.5 hour drive one way.

What kind of hours do you get stuck with during these kind of storms? 16 hours for me, but my direct reports were pulling 20 hours doing Bird Dogging for out of town crews.

It's amazing to see the work that utilities and generation plants do when there is a storm...The selflessness. Prioritizing customers/members over their own selves.

Standard 12hr shifts like normal... Altho with the 1000 year flood we had two years back, a whole shift(happened to be my shift, and I had scheduled PTO a few months prior so I was at home, WIN!!!) got trapped at work, all roads out were flooded and blocked off my highway patrol, and slept here. I think they were still only on the clock for 12 hours but got some kind of compensation for meals or something. Working over 12 hours is rare at my plant. Operators will sometimes stay over on a start up, two heads can operate more equipment than one, but they have to go home at 16 hours.

Line crews... that's a whole 'nother story. Those guys go on the road and don't come back until everything is fixed. There were pictures all over social media of our line crews wading waist deep in water to get to the poles.

Who do you report to? I'm a utility engineer, so I have to report as well. Tough pulling a 16hr shift when your home is in need too.

I was in storm mode for 1.5 weeks for Hermine, really REALLY will test your mental, and physical, strength.

It's amazing what things you'll learn to do during these type of challenges. I'm mostly an office Engineer, I was out delivering a huge transformer with a raging fever one day. Looking at our lines all on the ground with poles broken all over and our Members suffering just gets to you eventually.

Maybe we could get some tips for our tanks? I've since gotten a battery backup for my mp10. Anything else I could do? If we lose power, I'll be depending on my wife to keep up with water top offs since my ato will be offline. I'll be away from the tank for long periods.

You likely get some of those black rocks from near me in the Poconos-Anthracite county!

I will fire up my generator tomorrow and make sure I have it full of gas and extra on hand. Moving stuff in garage to get to panels but won't put them up until Friday if it's looking bad. Also making 50 gallons of rodi water to drink and use for tanks etc.
