I’m wondering if Fluconzanole has any type of interference with tests? Reason I ask is I tested MG with a salifert test, got 1200. Then later I added my Fluconzanole treatment, 400 ml of MG to start raising it, let that all settle for about an hour and just got back to back readings of 1160 for MG.

Would the Fluconzanole interfere and alter the test?

Mg testing has a high degree of variation IME. you could test the same sample twice and get 40 points difference.

Agreed, and I’m trying to keep that in mind. The test showed it went down after I dosed so it could be within the error if the test but wanted to see if the Fluconzanole would impact the results at all.

That difference of 40 ppm is likely variation in the rest method.

I ran magnesium levels, per Hanna multi parameter photometer daily tests at 1750-1800 for a solid month prior to starting fluconazole. The thinking was, as I have been using the Brightwell Hydrat-MG product on a dosing pump with the solution in a pump-circulated container, to weaken or kill a bryopsis overgrowth (the bryopsis did weaken around 1800 PPM yet it always came back if the levels lowered).

Fluconazole was added exactly per the ReefFlux recommendation and three days later all bryopsis was gone and other algae were noticeably reduced or gone. My Mg levels were consistently around 1780-1795 for the first few days with fluconazole and yet for the past 18 days now Mg, even when doubling the water sample for the test, is over 1800 ppm.

Given that for the past six months of at least weekly or more frequent Mg tests in concert with 100 ml average dosing of mg solution per day to maintain a persistent level, I have to assume the test results are influenced.

Now at the three week mark, I am using carbon and changing 10% of the water to remove any lingering Mg.

In human fluconazole treatment and use recommendations, it is shown/ thought to influence Ca and Mg absorption related to K+ as we know potassium is frequently a biological process cofactor in Mg pathways.

"Although the causative mechanism is unclear, severe hyperkalemia was associated with fluconazole in our patient. All other possible causes of hyperkalemia were excluded. Fluconazole may have unknown life-threatening side-effects, despite having been tested prior to its clinical use." https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articl...sative mechanism is,prior to its clinical use.

It may be fair to translate this phenomenon to reef organisms as well (corals) or the reagents/ reactant indicator chemistry for the marine sample test is otherwise influenced.

I do not see any mechanism for magnesium to change based on fluconazole. It has to go somewhere, and the only big song is co-deposition with calcium carbonate.

Doubling the water sample size would double, not halve, the result, unless I’m not understanding what you did.

Magnesium does easily get moved around by salinity changes and testing errors are very common.

Thanks, Randy. Yes, I did realize the double error (reversed approach) later when the issue was troubling me again in the shower.
