@Troy V One poster said they can nuke the tank when they become sexual. How did you combat that issue?

I have a small Derasa Clam I've had for over a year. Started out about 2, 2 1/2" , and is now a little over 3". I put it in a "clam hammock" , I bought at BRS. Just a small concave piece of antagonists for the clam to attach to. That takes about 5 days, then you can move it without damaging the foot. I keep my clam at the bottom with decent flow and about 90-150 PAR under Kessil A360s/TT5s. NO3: ~2-5 ppm NO3, PO4: 0, ALK: 8.5-8.8, Ca: 420 ppm, Mg: 1320 ppm

Good question. I usually get a spawn every year during the summer months with no issues, only happy corals. I wouldn't even care when I came home to cloudy tank during the summer months I just figured it was business as usual. However this year I had an epic spawning event that lasted for a week and a day, every 15 minutes from 1pm to 7pm everyday. My tank wasn't so happy after this. Nothing died, but I did get some algae and cyano.

Here is a video from the first day it started.

One more question, how did your skimmer react?

One more question, how did your skimmer react?

For many years I was skimmerless so it wasn't an issue. When this past spawn happened I removed the Vortex 250 pump, and put it in the intake chamber of the sump for aeration. Then I would remove the dark dry skimmate that accumulated

I have also found that this method works extremely well when using Chemiclean. But that is another conversation.

I want one someday but I believe my Lunare Wrasse will eat it and I am going to get a Aussie Harlequin Tusk at some point.

years in hobby and still deadly afraid of it being sabotaged, non-ideal conditions and loss of clam.

I don't have a clam because I'm afraid my 3 Viparspectra 165w LEDs wouldn't provide enough light for one and I don't have a PAR meter to check it with. My tank is full of small mussels and what I believe are some species of small clam, but I believe these are primarily filter feeders and not dependent on light.

1. Do you keep a clam?

Yes I have a clam, I ordered it from Pacific East Aquaculture

2. What type of clam is it?
Maxima (mainly purple with subtle tints of other colors)

3. How long have you had it?
First one I’ve ever had, since around End of July (5 months)

4. Where do you have it placed in your tank?
I have it almost dead center of the tank under two 250watt (20k) halides - it sits pretty much on the bottom of the tank approximately 30-32 inches from the light.
It seems happy, if the light is on it is fully opened, has great color, and has grown at least a half an inch since I got it (was about 1-1/2 inches now is over 2 inches

1. Do you keep a clam?
- Yes, currently 6

2. What type of clam is it?

- 2 Derasas, 1 Maxima, 1 Crocea, and 2 Squamosas

3. How long have you had it?

- I just set these up as part of my system so oldest is only 1 year but I've kept some for 8 years in the past.

4. Where do you have it placed in your tank?

- In a 12g Mr Aqua rimless plumbed into my 420g system with ceramic tiles under a bed of TLF Reborn media.
Lit by Maxspect R420R 15,000K 8" above the water line- currently running the Preset#1 lighting schedule and color mix. They seem to like the daylight better and open up fully during the morning hours and are more shut when the lighting is more blue at night time. I also run a pretty long light period that is over 8 hours.

I love clams and have successfully cared for many different types through the years. In fact, I would never have a tank without one. For me it adds a beautiful dimension to the reef. Imho it is the perfect reef inhabitant. It filters, feeds, and provides shelter, and they are super cool! Like a giant living photovoltaic cell.

My current and only clam I am keeping now is a Gigas that I've had since Feb. 2008. I designed my current system around it. It is displayed in a 241 gallon tank under a single 250 Watt MH and 2-Hydra 52 HDs. The par values are between 200-250.

As far as feeding the baby clams (under 2") I found it helpful, but more important to have a mature system with lots of natural food and nutrients. This is how I raised my two babies for a couple years prior to their demise while on vacation. I did not target feed them at all.

Nice clams everyone! Remember when you buy a clam, look at it from the side not only top down. The colors are totally different. I love that about them. Oh, all my clams have been under MH except my current maxima that has been under t5s.
