Thought this would be good info to share with all of you.

I was having some serious issues with ph and alk. I couldn't get my ph above 8.0 and alk would fall from 3.5 meq/ltr to 2.0 almost everyday. Even with dosing and monitoring ph constantly. I was adding 130ml of alk solution twice daily!! and ph was still not above 8.0. Now, i know that maintaining a stable alk is important but the ph would drop to 7.6 during the night hours. I have a refugium that is run opposite the tank and it would still drop. With this drop the alk would also fall to 2.5-2.7 meq/l. All this up and down was really doing damage to my lps and some of my sps.

I was toying with the idea of running a fresh air line from outside to the tank. Either with and air pump or to the skimmer. The only problem with this is, my tank is an island so, it's difficult to run anything to an outside wall. With it being in the high 80's low 90's lately outside the attic is scorching.

The other day noticed my mummies eye chalice is starting to recede!! That's the last straw! So, i started early and went up in the attic to run a 1/2 inch line from the tank to the outside wall in the garage. The line was to attach to the skimmer air intake and run to the outside to pic up fresh air. It's about a 35' run so i was concerned with restricting the air flow. That is why the 1/2" line. I drilled throught the outside wall and protected the intake with window screening to keep bugs and dirt out. Before going to the skimmer i installed an air filter made of a piece of 1" pvc capped at both ends and drilled holes to fit the tubing tightly. I have screening inside both ends, a piece of filter sponge and about a tsp of carbon to clean the air coming in.

Here is what the filter looks like:

It then goes to the air intake on the skimmer silencer. I did this so that it can get some purged air from inside the room with the tank as it has two intakes. I just restricted the one inside.

Since doing this the ph has stayed much more stable. I woke up to a ph of 7.85 and it is steadily climbing with the light cycle. The alk hadn't changed much at all. Tested last night at 3.7 and it was 3.5 this morning.

So, if any of you are having this problem. It's a great solution and is well worth looking into.

Just wanted to share....

I also did this but not to the extent that you have done. I used a clear housing from spectrapure from a RO system. I used the refilable DI cart housing and filled it with carbon. It maybe an overkill but my LFS said that who knows what pollutants are in residential air and to use carbon to absorb any pesticides, paint whatever else is floating in the air. It was 60 bucks and it is worth my piece of mind anyhow. Its amazing how well this works right.

Awesome idea ! Been thinking of doing the same thanks for the info

I had to do the same thing, only I don't have the filter on mine, thank you for posting that, great idea,I'll be making me a filter like that as well...nice

So far so good. Ph is more stable and animals look much better. I'll keep you all posted.

I would think that the free air in the attic would be sufficient vs going completely outdoors.. Nice solution anyways.

Solving the alk issue with have a lot to do with your PH stability and keeping it from swinging low. While they are directly connected a low PH does not inhibit the Alk. it is the other way around. My sump is in my garage and the PH swings from 8.15 to 8.06 at the most thru the day. alk is dead steady at 8 Dkh.

It may have been however, i have a very old house with rock wool insulation and the air temp gets into the 120's. Didn't want the hot air or the insulation to mess with anything. Figured while i was up there might as well go all the way.

As far as the alk goes, i'm aware that the alk swing has alot to do with the ph instability. That is why I needed to get the fresh air to the tank so that it was not swinging so low and the alk would not get used up keeping the ph stable. I was just surprised how much of a difference it made in such a short period of time. I was getting a full point swing in alk before doing this as it was being used up through the night hours. Now it's less than a point and the ph is more stable.

Also the alk buffer is what i was using to maintain the ph. That is why i spoke of the correlation between the two and the drop i was having.

Nice link to the co2 scrubber. I looked at that, but i had all of the materials i needed to do what i did. I would have to buy alot of things for the scrubber.

OK, I just now seen that. Is that to keep salt from building up in the venturi? Or is there another reason?

Mainly so I'm not restricting the Skimmer too much. I wanted about an 80/20 mix fresh to inside air so the performance wasn't compromised.

What is your ca and Mg levels at as both of those will lower alk if ca is too high and Mg is too low

Neither of those are a problem. CA is at 430 and mag is 1350. I have a very high load and a co2 problem. But thanks for asking ;)
