I have an eshops sump that does not have a fuge compartment. The drains go into a back section and then the water flows into the sock area. Has anyone ran a fuge in the 7" filter sock area? If so, how did you do it? I'm also considering a fleece roller if this can't work. My kids accidentally washed all of their clothes with my socks and it's a great time to change things up and have an excuse. LOL

In my view, comparing filter socks to a refugium is like comparing apples and oranges.

Filter socks are about mechanical filtration. Refugiums are about nutrient removal.

So adding a fleece roller with certainly do the same job as socks, but it won't do anything for nutrient removal.

That's a good point. Didn't think of that.

If you are upgrading to a larger tank. I'd hold off and just run the filter sock, then once you get a larger sump, you can set it up how you want. You could still throw a decent size rock in the sock section to act as "fuge" and assist with nutrients.

Give your socks and extra wash with no soap and rinse cycle and they should be perfectly fine. Kids on the other hand may want to wash there clothes again with soap if your socks were as dirty as mine when I wash them.

Thanks! Was worried about using them again as I just had a bunch of SPS peeling and realized I had an exposed magnet that rusted. Didn't want to risk another problem.

Have you looked into mesh socks? It's all I use these days because I can just spray them out with a garden hose. Felt socks are a pain to get clean.
I do have some of those, but it seems like a lot gets through, even with the smaller micron size. Have you had that issue?

The DT is nice and clear but sump is dirty. If you like a clean neat sump I would probably pass on them. I run a cryptic fuge and its full of detritus and critters. My socks usually overflow for a couple of days before I even remember to change them.
My sump is hidden so that doesn't bother me. I also forget to change my socks. LOL

I'm interested in the idea of maintenance free mechanical filtration. Using gravity and flow obstacles... it would turn into a refugium over time. You could shop vac it out every couple of years.

Basically, something just to keep the water column looking clear.
