Is the CaCO3 working for phosphate reduction as you’d hoped?

Update on simple horizontal scrubber. Phos (Elos) and nitrate zero on salifert but obviously not the case. Flow through sump from right hand side, scrubber tile about 1 inch under water surface. First pic is 3 weeks old, scrape and freshwater dip every 2 weeks after initial week. Now it’s started to really take off;

Hey there. For some reason there was a rapid reduction from 1.4ish ppm to 0.8ppm, but then the reduction stopped. I’m still changing out the sand in the reactor but no further phosphate reduction is evident, however, no increase either. Perhaps my rock is more porous than I thought and it’s bound up loads, but it’s calcite ocean rock and doesn’t appear porous. Or perhaps the cement I used had bound some phos (I plan on looking into this option)

Thats the underside of a ceramic floor tile. I no longer grow any algae in the sump. This particular horizontal scrubber started growing bryopsis, at an unbelievable rate. I have played around with scrubbers before, I’ll put the link to my meddling below, if interested :)

I have the same coralline algae. I like it; it looks nice, but in pictures it looks like cyano lol.

The last couple of weeks has been a positive experience.
Normal service has resumed with regards to the phosphate adsorption on my calcite sand filter it appears. I’ve started a desorption test to determine how much phosphate is being soaked up just to satisfy myself that it is actually doing something useful. During this test I rinsed the sand with tank water (normally throw it on the garden in a lump) and the amount of uneaten food, detritus that came out of it was rediculous, just for a Week. However I could do that with a sock, so felt it necessary to prove to myself the sand was actually doing something constructive in the tank, instead of an experiment bucket and TriSodium Phosphate where sand is largely bacteria free. I had noticed gas bubbles in the filter when I chocked it full of sand (this is the point where adsorption seemed to decline, thinking about it), perhaps it was channelling like a DI resin does. Anyhow, backed of on the amount of sand, no gas bubbles, slightly tumbling and now phos down to 0.55ppm (started at 1.4ish ppm ish) :)

Dunno, absolutely no experience with anything other than digitate hydroids. I ramped up my gyres to 100% today and disturbed the sump yesterday, perhaps I dislodged it from its parking space.

Stuck this spare light on the tank that I used on the quarantine tank;
So that’s 2 aquarays, 2 AI prime HDs and this one, all at 100%. The Fluval certainly gives the tank better colour, actually mimics the 14000K metal halide I had on my old tank, if I remember correctly.

Pavona went up in smoke (not surprised as it was overshadowed) and saved some frags which I’ve given to the wife for her tank. Still using my bags of sand for phos control, still using the bubbly CO2 scrubber. Nothing disasterous to report, which I like;

Hello - Oh no, not again.

Hi reefers. Had a tank(s) some 5 years ago and I entered the weird world of algae scrubbers. I got addicted to green. Sometimes I was up to 2 a.m. researching green. Then up for work @ 0430. Back then I had a mainly softy tank (6x2x2). This time around I’m doing a 60g sps, wish me luck.

Just for the heck of it; another victim of shading;
1.5% daily water changes, bag of regenerated sand, no other filtration, no skimmer.Alk replenished with mega strength Kalk, daily trace A + K. Removed DIY CO2 bubbly scrubber.

Lowered my lens less lights, turned down to 75% for first week, since 100%. Here’s 2 pics from 30th of October. Alkalinity consumption increased around 10% so I’ve increased my vinegar in Kalk to about 90mls per gallon.
