It is officially Day 10 since I started the cycle on the new setup, and we have reached a familiar milestone. The dreaded "ugly stage." Right on schedule, the diatoms have arrived and are taking over the new sand bed.

While it’s never pretty to look at, seeing that brown dusting is a rite of passage and a sign that the biological gears are turning. The best news is that the cycle is processing exactly as it should; my ammonia is officially reading a flat zero.

Here is where the rest of my parameters are sitting today:

  • Ammonia: 0 ppm
  • Alkalinity: 8.3 dKH
  • Calcium: 439 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1135 ppm
  • Phosphate: 0.07 ppm
Overall, the numbers are looking solid for this stage, though the magnesium is running just a little low. For now, it’s all about patience as I ride out the diatoms and let the tank establish its balance. I added 15 snails to start munching away at the new green that is popping up in my tank. I have 3 fish in the tank right now, but I plan to add more over time.

It’s been a remarkably busy week for the new tank! The tank is finally starting to come to life and look like a proper reef. I’ve made some major progress with livestock transfers and getting systems online, though it hasn't been without a few stressful moments.

I have officially moved all the fish over from my previous system. The original crew is swimming happily and settling into the new aquascape nicely:
  • Purple Tang
  • Tomini Tang
  • Flame Angel
  • 2x Chromis
  • Royal Gramma
  • Lawnmower Blenny
  • Pajama Cardinalfish
On March 7th, I also picked up a few new additions to add to the reef, a Long Nose Hawkfish, a Solon Fairy Wrasse, and an Adorned Wrasse.

Unfortunately, the Adorned Wrasse isn't doing too well. It’s currently refusing to eat and appears to be suffering from lockjaw. It’s always tough seeing a new fish struggle right out of the gate, especially when the rest of the transition has gone smoothly. I'll be monitoring it closely and crossing my fingers for a turnaround.

On a much brighter note, I took the plunge and added the very first piece of coral to the system! I plan to gradually add more as time goes on and the tank continues to mature. Since there's finally coral in the display, I went ahead and got the Trident hooked up and running so I can keep an eye on the parameters.

I also just placed an order with Reef Cleaners for my full clean-up crew. They are scheduled to arrive this Thursday, which will be a huge help in keeping the rocks and sand tidy as the system navigates its new-tank phases.

Equipment Updates. As for the ongoing sump saga, I'm still waiting for the correct replacement sump. It looks like it won't be arriving until late April, so we're just rolling with the current setup until then.

Thanks for following along with the build!

Beautiful set up. how do you like the tank so far? I'm looking between the M130 or M180.

I absolutely love the tank. I would definitely go bigger if my space allowed for it. I would not hesitate to buy an Eshopp tank again.
Thank you that's good to hear. Looking to replace my Reefer 300.

Your tank is coming together nicely. Love the scape!

As an FYI, I’m in Dallas, GA as well if you need some help with anything.

Hey hey! Any updates? Been following your build. Which clean up crew package did you go with?

Where do I begin? First and foremost, my new sump shipment from Eshopps has been delayed yet again. I am still not entirely sure what the holdup is, but I'm being told it boils down to "logistical issues." It is frustrating, but rather than dwelling on the delay, I decided to keep busy and make some major additions to the reef.

While waiting, I hit up my local frag swap and completely scored. I picked up some incredible designer SPS frags and a ton of other pieces to start filling out the aquascape. I know these pieces are small, but I hope to grow them out. On the fish side, I also added a beautiful Solar Wrasse to the mix.

Here is the full breakdown of the new coral additions:

The SPS Collection
  • Merlin’s Staff Acro
  • Bubble Bath Unicorn Acro
  • Pink Cadillac Acro
  • Robinhood Acro
  • Fruitopia Acro
  • Alice in Wonderland Acro
  • PC Rainbow Acro
  • Green Slimer
  • Cornbread Rainbow Monti
  • Green/Orange Grafted Monti Cap
The LPS Collection
  • Dragon Soul
  • Orange Acan
  • Unknown Neon Green Acan ( Seriously, this thing glows)
  • Holy Grail Micromussa
  • Jack-O'-Lantern Leptoseris
  • Green and Purple Brain Coral
Softies, Mushrooms & Zoas
  • Godzilla Mushrooms (x2) ( The original had a baby )
  • Radioactive Mushroom
  • Rasta Zoa Rock

Knowing how much shadowing can become an issue once these frags start growing into full colonies, I upgraded the lighting rig. I added a 61” AquaticLife 61" T5 Hybrid fixture to run alongside my Reef Breeders Photon V2. I have a par meter on order, and as soon as it comes in, I will mount the corals onto the rockwork.

On the chemistry front, things are incredibly stable. I have been dosing 30ml of All-For-Reef daily, and my alkalinity has been holding steady right between 8.5 and 9.0 dKH, verified by my Apex Trident. I am still doing this manually for now, but I will eventually get around to hooking up the dedicated Apex DOS dosing pump.

I recently took a vacation to Florida and finally had the chance to test the AF4 frozen auto-freeze feeder. It worked flawlessly and is easily one of the best additions I’ve made to the system for peace of mind while traveling.

I also cannot say enough good things about my Maxspect skimmer. It is hands-down the quietest skimmer I have ever owned, and it continuously pulls dark, nasty skimmate all day long without missing a beat. Down in the sump, the Red Sea ReefMat is still going strong on its original fleece roll, though I suspect I will finally need to swap the roll out within the next month.

Despite the shipping delays, the tank is thriving, and everything appears to be incredibly happy!

I read reports that it would overheat if I put it in the stand, so I 3D-printed a bracket to mount on the wall beside the tank. I do not plan to run it 24/7 because it puts off so much heat, but for trips, it's a Godsend.

Oh wow that's awesome. I don't have a 3D printer so I'll have to figure out what to do if I get one 😅

The tank is looking good and nice score on the new corals. I was thinking of going as well, but really need to stop adding corals and let the ones I have grow out. Waiting that long for a sump sucks!

You should have come out! It was sort of small, but there were some good deals to be had.
